Don't overthink it. Play your stars unless they're hurt, or unless you get halfway through the season and they're having a bad year. Playing matchups is for your second RB and WR, not the guy you drafted #1 overall.

This. Every time I've ever tried 'playing matchups' with offensive players, it fails.

OTOH, if you don't have one of the stud defenses, you can't go wrong plucking whoever is available and playing the crappiest team. I'm in a keeper league with 2 DEF's as starters and it worked terrifically almost every week the year I tried it.

What 3 RBs are you starting?

McFadden

Steven Jackson

Either Kevin Smith or Fred Jackson

It is an 8 team league with my close friends back home so you can end up with some pretty good rosters... although I was pretty surprised to end up with the RB's I did. Usually they go faster in our draft, but this year, I was able to get the Jackson's later than I thought.

I've been doing this for 2-3 years now (at least) and it's very successful. I'm in 4 leagues this year and in every one, my last pick has been a defense. I don't even try for any stud defenses anymore, partially because of unpredictable variance and partially because I'd rather have the better offensive player and go with merry-go-round defenses.

I would definitely do this if it was allowed, but our league rules only allow for a one-time pickup of a defense during the season to avoid this scenario. I am glad we have that rule.

Swapping out Miles Austin to put in Jason Witten at the last minute didn't work out. :(

I left Austin on the bench in favor of Nicks and Bryant. Should have drafted Ogletree instead, who knew.

I played Nicks too. At least Murray did reasonably well. Could've used some TD's.

Ouch, that would make for a hefty strategy change for me.

Same here. I draft defense with my last pick, and I pick up a defense each week based on matchups.

Now there is going to be a big run on the waiver wire for Ogletree.

Yup he was picked up right away. And he'll probably catch about 10 passes the rest of the season.

I need to start 2 of these and I have 1 WR spot and 1 Flex spot open (feel free to laugh at me):

Titus Young v STL

Greg Little v Philly

Kendall Wright v NE

Ben Tate v Miami

Peyton Hillis v Atlanta

I'm leaning toward Little for sure for lack of better options for Weeden to throw to in Cleveland. I'm also leaning toward Young because of the Detroit offense and the St Louis defense, but Wright and Tate are kind of tempting.

Also:

Alex Smith @ GB

Fitzpatrick @ NYJ

Locker v NE

You did what?! I'm starting piece of crap Owen Daniels rather than Witten in one of my teams. I still think Austin is the best receiver on the Cowboys barring injury.

And it took nearly 20 hours before someone in my 12 team league finally bit on Ogletree. Unless there's at least one major injury, he's got no shot at fantasy relevance this year, imo. Receivers always come out of nowhere for a monster week and then disappear again.

Oh my. Are you in a 20 team, 2QB league?

My defense is that Austin was coming off injury too, and I thought that Witten would be more of a go-to guy for Romo. It was a poor decision, though Austin did absolutely nothing for 3 quarters...

Haha, nope - it's a standard 10 team league. It was an auction draft that my internet crapped out just before it started and the computer decided I didn't need to bid more than $1 for any player. If you want a good laugh, my team is listed in the "Rate my FF team" thread - it's the worst fantasy team I've ever seen.

Arian Foster left practice with knee soreness yesterday. He's probably fine, but watch that situation. Assuming Foster plays I would take Titus Young and Hillis out of your group. There are a lot of coin flips there though.

For QBs I like Alex Smith out of that group. Maybe Locker, but I would stay away from Fitz this week. I've got Fitzpatrick, Smith, and Russell Wilson in my 2QB league and am going Smith/Wilson.

Thanks! Yeah, I noticed Arian was banged up. I'm hoping he misses, but it looks really unlikely. Hillis does have TD potential.

I have been planning to start Smith, but the matchups scare me between Smith and Fitz. I don't like the idea of Locker in his first NFL start against Belichick, though.

Young is becoming a definite start for me. Tate is as well if Arian is more injured than they're letting on. Like I said to Smack, I like Locker's matchup the most, but NFL start #1 vs Belichick is a scary thought fantasy-wise.

Week one has sucked so far with injury decisions. Luckily, I sat Witten, but I have no guarantee that Owen Daniels will do anything. The big decision:

Need 2 RB:

Doug Martin vs. CAR

Rashad Jennings @ MIN

Maurice Jones-Drew @ MIN

Ben Tate vs. MIA

I think I will go with Doug Martin for one spot, because he seems closest to sure points. Can't decide between the other 3. If Adrian would happen to miss the game, that would help quite a bit.

Rashad Jennings is starting for Jax, which neither MJD nor Tate are doing. Now, if you think MJD will come in and not miss a beat, that's a whole different debate but I'd go with the guy who is starting.

That's what scares me. I think MJD will still probably get 15+ carriers, and if it's a close game like it should be, I'm guessing he'll carry the load late, and probably get the goal line touches.

And Tate is capable of 10-12 points even in a backup role.

I somehow accidentally sat Frank Gore in favore of DeAngelo Williams. :banghead:

Wouldn't have mattered though. EVERY person on my opponents team out produced their projected points except for Cam Newton.
