Can someone explain to me how this works?

Gonzalez was claimed on waivers. Which means they can trade for him, but do the other three have to CLEAR waivers to be involved in the trade?

And even as horrible of a contract Crawford has been the past two seasons - he's still a lottery ticket. His legs haven't gone anywhere and if he's healthy to start the next season he should be okay. I am not saying he will justify his contract, but I have a hard time seeing him being a complete albatross the rest of the way.

they claimed beckett. punto and crawford either cleared waivers or were claimed by the dodgers.

him being fully healthy to start the season seems unlikely.

The Sox are a 7 games under .500 roster with no payroll flexibility to improve in the future. They're shedding about $280 million in future payroll obligations. Whatever faint glimmer of hope they have looking forward, at least they're is hope. That's more than they currently have.

It was said somewhere upthread that Boston is kicking in some cash on the deal, but do we know exactly how much?

On SOSH, they are hearing that the Dodgers will pick up 96% of the salary coming from Boston.

I definitely think this is a good trade for the Red Sox, but I'm surprised the Sox fans aren't more upset about losing AGonz after all the fanfare his arrival brought 2 years ago. I know he's underperformed a bit but the dude is still a great hitter and young enough (well..he's 30) to be a contributor 2-3 years down the road.

Would you have bailed on the Soriano contract in August 2008 if the Cubs were out of it and not likely to contend in 2009? If you could get a return and not pay most of the contract?

Hell yes.

Alfonso Soriano would have been 33-year old Alfonso Soriano in 2009 as opposed to Adrian Gonzalez being 31-year old Adrian Gonzalez in 2012. This doesn't seem like the best comparison.

It's two years for a cheaper player, although the money comes sort of close to a wash with the 4 year difference. It's not all that different. Gonzalez is in the middle of a poor year for him while Soriano was in a good year.

It's different because one player is better than the other and younger. Soriano was a poorly thought out move from day one. Gonzalez is better and only 30 this year; he's the kind of guy you can still build a team around.

Compared to the contracts that Howard, Pujols, Fielder and Votto have, Gonzalez's is great.

Gonzalez contract isn't bad yet, but if he doesn't significantly rebound next year it could get that way in a hurry. $21 million per season for the next 7 years is a lot of production to live up to. Certainly more than 2.4 WAR. That said, I expect the change of scenery to do wonders for him and he'll go right back to his dominant self next year.

Im sure the Red Sox fans aren't ecstatic about giving up Gonzales, but if it's what it takes to move 2/$30 million of Beckett and 6/$120 million of Crawford (and get back a good young potential TOR pitcher like Webster) you can live with it.

Posted
When all is said and done Gonzalez will still probably be worth around $15 million this year, so I don't think worrying about someone as talented as him bouncing back at age 30 would be something to lose sleep over.

If you're not worried about the guy you just aquired who was worth $15 million while being paid $21 million and will only be paid more while presumably not becoming more talented at his age, you're a fool. The Red Sox are selling him because of his presumed production two-plus years from now. He doesn't just have to bounce back for it to work for them, he needs to bounce back to his age 29 state at age 34.

Well, we don't live in a made up world where impact players have to be worth their entire contract to be valuable. Because they almost never are. Wait, that's wrong; leave out "almost."

The Red Sox are picking up around 11 mill evidently. It'll be interesting to see what they do this offseason for sure. It certainly won't be a rebuild, just a retool. I'd love to find a way to get Rubby from them.

Considering the Cubs just traded for Arodys Vizcaino less than a month ago, I'd say that source is wrong.

Yes, very wrong apparently. Now I'm trying to figure out how that myth has become so perpetuated.

I guess I'm surprised that nobody blocked the trade by claiming some of the other involved players that were put on waivers. Had the Dodgers players already cleared waivers before Gonzalez was claimed? I would have thought one of the NL contenders would have made a claim on Loney just to halt the process.

Evan Longoria says you can put "almost" in.

I don't understand why the minor leaguers are exempt from the waiver process. Seems like they should have to clear waivers as well. Or is this a ptbnl type thing?

If they're not on the 40 man (not sure if this is the case for any of them) then they don't have to be put on waivers. If they're on the 40 man, then I'd guess most or all of them will be PTBNLs until the Dodgers can trade them.
