Decided this deserved it's own thread given how freaking huge of a deal it could end up being. How the heck do the Dodgers have the prospects to pull this off?

Gordon Edes ‏@GordonEdes

Blockbuster: red Sox, Dodgers working on deal that would send AGon, Crawford, Beckett and Punto to LA. Hurdles remain, but closing in

Isn't Crawford on the DL? I thought players on the DL couldn't be traded.

Players on the disabled list can not be traded while they are disabled.

However:

A team may make a trade involving a player to be named at a later date.

There are two restrictions on deals involving players to be named. Any transaction made in this manor must be completed within 6 months of the initial transaction. Also the player to be named can not have played in the same league as the team he is being traded to.

A player on the disabled list can be traded as a player to be named. This happens because players on the disabled list can not be traded while they are disabled.

Considering the Cubs just traded for Arodys Vizcaino less than a month ago, I'd say that source is wrong.

I'm not sure if everyone realizes how MEH Gonzalez has been and how not good to bad Beckett has been (not good if you're looking at peripherals, bad if you're looking at results).

And Crawford, well...

My Boston friend, who loves the deal:

"Beckett is trash, Crawford has too much working against him here to succeed and A-Gon has begun to both a) alienate himself from the fans, media and most importantly management/team, and b) dislike being here. It's dumping 60 million a year and 3 distractions."

AGonz is OPS'ing .971 since the ASB, I think he's fine.

yay for arbitrary endpoints

first half doesn't count etc.

Beckett has the Saberhagen, good year, bad year thing going for him. I would at least think Crawford hasn't dropped off that badly. Dodgers still have Zach Lee, Dee Gordon, Joc Pedersen and Gould as trade chips to acquire a SS and a TOR starter. My guess is they'll trade for a SS or 3B and sign Greinke over the offseason.

I still think AGone is fine but I feel like a lot of people seem to be assuming Beckett will go back to being good again.

Beckett was good last year. His stuff appears to be down about a mile and a half per pitch. Back effect or is it a definite dropoff forever? Either way, my guess is his numbers spike just because of the move to the NL West.

Jesus, Boston have lost their minds.

Not with all the salary relief they're getting.

Maybe they can use that money to get players they hope are as good as Gonzalez and Beckett.

I'm pretty sure that second part won't be much of a problem.

Did they turn into Kansas City in terms of revenue stream without me noticing?

TT said it better than I did. Whatever they're getting back, they have to hope it's as good as what they're giving up, especially Gonzalez.

More like only Gonzalez. Beckett is a gamble, AT BEST, at $16M through two more seasons with declining stuff and at 32 years of age. The park and league change will obviously help him.

Crawford is a terrible albatross of a contract at this point.

I really don't think the Dodgers give two shits about money. The Puig signing immediately becomes stupid too, because you've got a Crawford/Kemp/Ethier OF signed for another 5 years.

Frankly I'm bewildered that Boston is giving up Gonzalez. I suppose it's to offset the burden of Crawford and risk of Beckett, but he's still a cornerstone player who isn't very old. If they're doing this because of the reported rift between AGon and Valentine, their FO is even more dysfunctional than I've thought, which is pretty [expletive] dysfunctional.

Who are they going to get that you can say with certainty will be better than Beckett? Greinke, who will be wanting an enormous deal, might only be a marginal upgrade, and also might combust with exposure to the insane media environment in Boston right now? Maybe Anibal Sanchez? That's pretty much the list.

I can't imagine a guy with some pretty heavy anxiety issues would ever, ever want to subject himself to the gutter press that is the Boston media.

Yeah, I'm really amused that it seems the best case scenario is "we got rid of the guys with personality issues so we have the money to go get Zack Greinke and Josh Hamilton".

If the value of these huge, long contracts for sluggers in their 30s is heavily stacked towards the beginning (like we heard about a lot talking about Pujols and Fielder so recently), I can see why you'd do that. The first two years of his contract are gone and it doesn't seem like they'll contend in the third. Still plenty of value for a team in the Dodgers situation.

Of course, we'll have to see what kind of return it is.

If their front office would start to collectively act like grownups and not the collection of clowns featured in Treymon's paint art, maybe they'd realize that they've done exactly nothing to address the rampant scapegoating and out of control vitriol over the last 11 months or so.

Boston, by doing nothing, would have probably been well tipped to contend again next season. That roster had the best record in baseball before their pitchers all got hurt and they collapsed last season.

they're giving up webster too.

not sure how to feel about this for either side. kind of an unprecedented trade, especially in august.

Rubby has the ability to slide into Beckett's spot and be a TOR guy, may take a bit of time to get his stuff back and innings up after TJS though.
