In all honesty, our beat writers(other than Bruce, who's excellent) are flat out pathetic. How do they even still have jobs? Sullivan, in particular, after the Dempster insinuation.....I just can't see how anyone within the Cubs organization has anything to say to him, making him completely useless.

Also unsure as to whether Mooney is considered a beat guy or not, but I like him. And Padilla seems OK as well.

Seems like Goldstein is going to miss talking to Fleita.

Kevin Goldstein ‏@Kevin_Goldstein

We're not inside enough to know the whys or if it should happen, I just tend to think, "Damn, that dude always returned my calls."

Funny how you react to front office firings when you are in the media.

Bruce, too...

Always a sad day. RT @Kevin_Goldstein: Funny how you react to front office firings when you are in the media.

What a weird post.

They are all pathetic, except for more than half of them? Sullivan didn't do anything wrong in my opinion. He reported what he heard. It's not his job to spread Theo's message how he wants it spread. It seems pretty clear he said what he said.

I wonder if Wasserstrom wishes he could have his job doing the media guides back.

He's still pathetic, though.

Said it last year when Ricketts extended Wilkens and Fleita before Theo got here. It was a bad decision on both. Tommy just can't help himself to micro-managing. Let them go elsewhere and screw up someone else's system.

Sure. He's an obnoxious twit, although he's worth following on twitter. It just doesn't make sense for anybody to freak out on him for the Dempster situation when by all accounts he reported what was said. He's not a Cubs employee.

You realize "Wilkens" just got promoted right?

And Theo waited to make these firings for a reason. He obviously saw value in having people around and evaluating who was worth keeping.

I added those guys after I typed the first part. Probably should have erased that. But, between Sullivan, Rogers, Greenberg, Kaplan, Rosenbloom, Wittenmyer, Rozner, Levine, there's far more idiots writing about the Cubs, than there are solid guys.

As for Sullivan, I disagree completely with you. Whether it's true or not, he threw the team he covers under the bus, jeopardizing a relationship with another team. To me(granted, I'm not a journalist) but you should at least attempt to protect the team you cover somewhat. If for no other reason, they may give you more to work with, in the long run, for helping them out.

You think Tom Ricketts is micro managing?

I didn't like the extensions, but it made sense to bring some stability to the organization, not knowing at the time who he would be able to get run the show.

Hardly any of those guys you mentioned are beat writers.

That's a ridiculously silly statement to make. Protect the team?

Someone needed to do Fleita's job. Epstein wasn't going to be able to replace everyone in one offseason (a shortened on, at that, given when Epstein became official).

From a networking standpoint, absolutely. Especially in this case actually. Since it's obvious none of the current guys are "in" well enough to break stories with any regularity right now. Do you want to be the best at your job or do you want to be an old broken down hack? If you're looking out for the Cubs, it's probably much more likely that you'll get info from them. If you do the exact opposite, it's likely they'll keep you out of the loop entirely. And again, without knowing, my guess is the Trib could easily find and would probably want someone writing about the Cubs that actually has access to them. Which after this thing, I honestly expect them to slowly start freezing Sullivan out.

Back on the original topic, I've heard this Finley guy mentioned from Boston as a replacement. Was it a one year agreement we wouldn't rob them of personnel or was it longer than that?

You are weird.

Why do you care about Paul Sullivan's future employment prospects and networking capability?

You whined about him throwing the team under the bus, but he can risk his contacts all he wants. It's up to him how he treats a story and the potential ramifications. You are blaming him for a story getting out when the person who had the ability to keep the story getting out, and the motivation to keep the story from getting out, and responsibility to keep the story from getting out was Theo. He didn't have to say what he said. Don't get mad at a reporter for reporting.

Not sure, but it would be a promotion anyway.

It's separate. I want Sullivan fired, so I'm glad as [expletive] he's a dumbass. But, if it were me, I'd want to advance myself as much as possible with a new regime. And THAT was a perfect chance for someone to help themselves out wth Theo.

As for the weird comment, I honestly think you're better than that, and have never stooped to insults in our disagreements before, so I'm not returning the insult.

I'm sorry if you feel insulted, but your line of thinking on this topic is very weird.

It's like a Fox News viewer pissed at the NY Times for reporting on a story that would reflect poorly on a republican. It's not the reporter's job to do what you expect him to do.

Navin (Pasadena, CA): What are your thoughts on the dismissal of Oneri Fleita?

John Manuel: Jim and Will Lingo will remember my rant about Oneri during the 2007 Prospect Handbook book tour. It was inevitable; he played at Creighton and was clearly part of Jim Hendry's posse in Chicago. Being in a baseball front office is like being in Congress in a way, there's a long voting record to go through and pick over and see hits and misses. Oneri has hits and misses too.I'm sure he has his fans, friends and allies in the industry; I just don't know any of them.

How quickly can we expect a replacement to be named?

I have no idea, but it seems like something that doesn't need to be filled soon. The guys doing the work are all still doing the work. So they can probably wait until the end of the season when everybody starts coming out of contract.

I understand the analogy but I don't think it really fits here. I do understand that I'm asking a guy I can't stand to handle something in a way I would have myself and that's borderline contradictory admittedly. The bottom line for me is I hope we find ourselves rid of Sullivan fairly quickly and I honestly think this could be the beginning of the end for him, because he obviously didn't endear him to the FO, even if they did make the original mistake here.
