Said it last year when Ricketts extended Wilkens and Fleita before Theo got here. It was a bad decision on both. Tommy just can't help himself to micro-managing. Let them go elsewhere and screw up someone else's system.

You realize "Wilkens" just got promoted right?

And Theo waited to make these firings for a reason. He obviously saw value in having people around and evaluating who was worth keeping.

wilken got promoted to a position where he could do little damage. my guess is he takes a job in the same capacity with another team within the next year. i loved the 2011 draft, thanks for that much.

I don't agree.

I disagree too. I think it's a very legit promotion and one he's looking forward to tackling. I think him and McLeod are really tight and it wasn't hard for him to transition with the new group, with a main guy backing him from the beginning.

i don't know about that. wilken wants to be the director of amateur scouting somewhere, he wants to run a draft. to a guy like that, the only true promotion is to GM or that fake president tag Theo holds.

he may have gotten a nice little raise, theo, jed, and jason may respect him a great deal, enough to give him that raise and keep him around. but he simply wasn't respected enough to be retained in the position that he was in.

you already are wrong no matter what happens. And i have your boring, non-vulgar username to remember that fact.

As far as Wilken goes, its hard to say what hd may do. I wont be suprised if he left, but I dont think Theo would promote a guy just to not have to fire him (isn't that from a Friends episode?)

That's some backward-ass logic right there, Sulley. The fact that they promoted him out of his old position means they didn't respect him? Reeeeeeediculous

It's not that crazy of a thought. You "promote" a guy to special assistant to get him out of the day to day aspect of the job because you want somebody else running the day to day and you just want his advice going forward.

I think it fits with the "we want to be wrong less" strategy basically. The more guys in the room, themoreopinions heard, the better.

Hearing it's a bloodbath in Houston with a bunch of scouts being told they're not being renewed for next year

Kind of weird that that happens on the same day. Wonder why.

Back on the original topic, I've heard this Finley guy mentioned from Boston as a replacement. Was it a one year agreement we wouldn't rob them of personnel or was it longer than that?

Not sure, but it would be a promotion anyway.

Mooney's latest article says we were allowed one hire of a non supervisory person over a 3 year period and we used it on Matt Dorey, a national crosschecker.

When did Elaine Benes get assigned into an organizational structure decision making capacity with the Cubs?

When Theo Epstein was being recruited to run the Cubs, he found it more than a little odd that Ricketts and Kenney had just fired Jim Hendry and rewarded one of his right hand men, farm director Fleita, with a four-year contract.

Epstein, according to sources, would not have taken the baseball president's job if he had not gotten an affirmative answer to this question: If I decide we don't need him, can I fire Fleita?

They took him out of a decision-making roll because they didn't want him making decisions. They gave him a nice new title as an advisor, along with a raise because they like him, value his opinion, and didn't want to lose him. That's not such a crazy idea.

What is this?

weren't you the one who went on about how not even the secretary would keep her job and if Wilken or Flieta lasted to opening day you'd change your name to "raging anus"

Maybe I've confused you?
