CUBS RECALL THREE PLAYERS FROM TRIPLE-A IOWA

TUESDAY, JULY 31, 2012

CHICAGO – The Chicago Cubs today recalled infielder Adrian Cardenas, catcher Welington Castillo and right-handed pitcher Casey Coleman from Triple-A Iowa.

All three players will be available for the Cubs tonight against Pittsburgh at Wrigley Field. Coleman will start tonight’s game vs. the Pirates.

Cardenas, 24, joins the Cubs for his second stint in the big leagues this season. He made his major league debut earlier this year and batted .189 (7-for-37) with five doubles, four runs scored and one RBI in 25 games from May 7-June 25. Cardenas saw major league action at second base (six games, four starts), third base (one start) and left field (two games, one start).

The left-handed batter and right-handed thrower is batting .322 (68-for-211) with 20 doubles, four triples, two home runs and 28 RBI in 56 games with Iowa this season. Cardenas has a .407 on-base percentage and a .483 slugging percentage, good for an .890 OPS. Cardenas was claimed off waivers from Oakland in February.

Castillo, 25, also joins the Cubs for his second stint in the majors this year. He batted .206 (7-for-34) with two doubles, one home run and four RBI during his first stop in the big leagues this season, a stint that was interrupted by a sprained right knee that landed him on the disabled list from May 22-June 14. Castillo has spent part of the last three seasons in the majors and is a career .224 hitter (15-for-67) with six doubles, two home runs and nine RBI in 20 big league contests.

The right-handed hitting Castillo is batting .260 (38-for-146) with six doubles, six home runs and 22 RBI in 44 games with Iowa this season. He has a .375 on-base percentage and a .425 slugging percentage to post an .800 OPS.

Coleman, 25, went 0-1 with a 7.32 ERA (16 ER/19.2 IP) in 16 relief appearances for the Cubs during his first big league stint this season from May 12-July 2. Prior to allowing seven runs in 1.2 innings in his final big league outing June 27, Coleman had pitched to a 4.50 ERA (9 ER/18.0 IP) in his first 15 appearances, including 13 of 15 games during which he allowed one run or less. He had a seven-outing scoreless streak from May 19-June 4 covering 7.0 innings. Coleman has pitched part of the last three seasons in the majors with the Cubs (47 appearances, 25 starts).

In Triple-A this year, Coleman has pitched primarily as a starter and is 2-4 with a 5.01 ERA (28 ER/50.1 IP) in 11 appearances (nine starts). He allowed nine earned runs in 2.2 innings pitched in his July 21 start at Albuquerque; remove that outing and Coleman has posted a 3.79 ERA (17 ER/40.1 IP) in his remaining eight Triple-A starts.

Without looking, did we add a single player that moves onto our 40 man?

Vizcaino, at least until he moves to the 60 day DL. Chapman should be close to the 40 man if he isn't added.

There's got to me one more MLB spot coming, right? Presumably Sappelt? Because we shipped off four.

We brought up Castillo and Cardenas for the 2 position players, so they need to fill the other rotation spot. Volstad and Raley would seem to be the favorites.

Or I could just look at Cubs.com. Vizcaino (60 Day DL), Brigham, and Chapman are all added.

Garza, Shark, Wood, Germano, Coleman should fill the 5 man now, right? Wood should go tomorrow on normal rest and then an off day allows them to slot Garza in next week.

I forgot that Germano was taking Garza's spot temporarily. It'll be interesting to see if they keep both Germano and Coleman in there, or if they just viewed them as rubber arms that they can use to mop up innings while the roster was in flux.

Well, with the lack of guys below them that need the spots I think they could view them in both ways.

My guess is that this was made when they thought they had a chance to move Soriano (3 hours ago)

It probably would be better to give Volstad one last chance to get it together instead of keeping Coleman in the rotation the rest of the season.

I thought that before, but at this point I can't see him magically figuring it out. However, it could be worthwhile to give him a crack at the pen rather than sticking a fork in him all together. I won't bother re-stating the obvious choice.

What's the story on Alberto Cabrera?

Very mediocre in his minor league career, but has really come around in a big way since he's been converted to a reliever. 12.1 K/9 and 1.9 BB/9 between AA and AAA this year. Fastball/slider guy that can throw in the high 90s.

Not sure where to put this but Sveum said he'll meet with front office on Thursday to discuss the roster. Said Jackson and Vitters could both be called up this month and both would play everyday.

Potentially elite reliever.
