For the rumors not worthy of their own thread...

According to Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports.com, the Red Sox are contacting teams to gauge their trade interest in Carl Crawford.

Well, that didn't take long. No deal is close, but Rosenthal notes that the Red Sox have reached out to the Marlins and Dodgers. Crawford is in the second-year of a seven-year, $142 million contract and may eventually require Tommy John surgery on his elbow, so he will be awfully difficult to move. He also has the ability to block trades to two unidentified clubs. For what it's worth, Rosenthal speculates that the Red Sox could find a match with either Hanley Ramirez or Jose Reyes.

Is this implying that Rosenthal thinks they could swap Crawford for Hanley or Reyes? Seriously? Using that logic, we should be able to find a match with Soriano for Hanley then.

Any interest in Soriano and Dempster for Crawford and prospects if the Red Sox chipped in some major $$$?

Extending that blurb, from MLBTR...

The Red Sox and Marlins are discussing a trade that would send Carl Crawford to Miami for Hanley Ramirez and Heath Bell, Bob Nightengale of USA Today reports. The Marlins approached the Red Sox about the possible blockbuster, Nightengale reports.

If that's all it takes to get Hanley Ramirez, the Cubs need to jump in immediately.

Seriously. They have more than enough cash to pay him and if the rumors are true (looking for a 3rd base prospect), then they obviously aren't sold that Vitters is the answer.

Did you guys miss where Ramirez is in the middle of his second straight year of being anywhere between bad and not all that great?

Did you miss where Luis Valbuena is our third baseman? I'm not expecting Ramirez to get back to 2009 numbers, but he can hit thirty homers, which is something most third basemen can't do. If we can get him for next to nothing other than money, we should do it.

Yep. He's been declining pretty steadily for last couple of years. Len and Bob made a point of this during his first AB yesterday.

Hanley's not much different than he was a couple of years ago, aside from an abnormally poor BABIP and that he's hitting more FB, which would be fine if he played in a more HR-friendly park, like Wrigley

and he's still just 28...i'd take him in a heartbeat if the price wasn't outrageous

Soriano for Hanley, straight up.

Any interest in Soriano and Dempster for Crawford and prospects if the Red Sox chipped in some major $$$?

Would you even need to include Dempster?

Cubs owe Soriano $46 million

Sox owe Crawford $142 million

Cubs get: Crawford + $60 million

Red Sox get: Soriano

This deal saves the Red Sox $36 million in the long run and opens up a roster spot if/ when they decide to get rid of Soriano. It also gives them immediate help in LF where Soriano's bad legs don't have to cover much ground. Cubs get out of Soriano's contract, have the luxury of moving Crawford's surgery to next week if they feel like it and will pay Crawford $82 million over the rest of his contract.

Is Crawford worth $13.5 mil per over the next 6 seasons?

Wow, I didn't realize the Crawford contract was THAT bad. I don't think I would even do that unless maybe the Sox payed that $60 million up front, in which case it's really way more than that.

Source: #Cubs drawing interest in Baker, Johnson as well as the more familiar names. Both could be RH bats off bench for contenders.

i don't think that fits the idea of getting out of his contract to take on another terrible one that is now longer. right now there isn't a big need to move him for anything that kills us-like we did with zambrano. we might actually be able to move him at a rate that we may not have to eat much of the deal. we may not get much but the only problem with soriano basically is his deal. he might help someone as a DH.

nice thing about soriano is that the is no rush to get a geal done before waivers. after the deadline we can put him on waivers and if anyone blocks it...let them have him.

Astros, Blue Jays Complete Ten-Player Trade

By Ben Nicholson-Smith [July 20 at 9:48am CST]

The Astros and Blue Jays have completed a ten-player trade, the teams announced. The Astros obtain seven players from Toronto: Major Leaguers Francisco Cordero and Ben Francisco, minor leaguers Joe Musgrove, Asher Wojciechowski, David Rollins and Carlos Perez, and a player to be named. The Astros send Brandon Lyon, J.A. Happ and David Carpenter to Toronto in the trade.

Jesus H [expletive], the Astros made out like bandits here. They gave away the expiring contract of Brandon Lyon, a so-so at best back end starter, and a meh 27 year old reliever and ended up with 3 high ceiling arms between the ages of 19-23, as well as a couple of vets that they could either flip at the deadline or dump. We couldn't have got that package for a pile of our junk? Hopefully he was just too preoccupied with Feecing Ned Colletti for Zach Lee.

In addition to the pitchers, while when I clicked on the "Carlos Perez", MLBTR links to a 41 year old pitcher who hasn't pitched professionally since 2001, however the Carlos Perez the Astros got was actually a 21 year old A catcher with a line of .275/.358/.447/.804 and 5 HR.

Wojciechowski would easily be in our top 15 right now.

that may or may not be true, but if it is that's only because our pitching sucks. his ceiling really isn't that high, except maybe as a reliever. he's barely averaged 7 K/9 IP and that's as a 23 year old in A-ball.

Posted
He's not elite, but he's solid. They've taken it slow with him as he's had injury issues in college. You're right, he probably winds up in the pen. But he IS an actual prospect, much different than Rollins.

Not sure why he repeated High A, because he made over 20 starts there last year with decent success. He may be ultimately a reliever, but he does have an improving sinker (low-mid 90s) and doesn't walk people. His secondary pitches are why the K rate isn't higher, but I do think he can be a #3 starter at his ceiling.
