@Kevin_Goldstein: Good, but not beast tools like Soler. RT @ChiMike702: @Kevin_Goldstein What's the scouting report on Yasel Puig?

Sounds... average?

I'm not overly impressed by the video or scouting reports either; time to put the faith in Theo and see how everything sorts out.

Well, who knows? Yasiel Balaguert, who we signed for 400k, originally was being called a guy who may get 10 mill or more.

The swing was a bit strange and there didn't seem to be a ton of bat speed yet the ball seemed carried really well off his bat. I was most impressed with his arm on that double play.

i think the balls are made of rubber or something, in that video it keeps bouncing like they're playing on the moon

Yeah, I hadn't really noticed that. After I looked again, the singles were landing and bouncing head high. That's certainly a bit odd.

Maybe it's the field and not the ball?

That was my thought. The ball over the fence didn't have the same kind of bounce on it.

Badler said he's got a report coming soon. He says to temper expectations. On cell, so can't link, but all sorts of funny [expletive] happened at his workout today. Was late to his workout, due to being in a different country. Changed agents, then apparently changed back. Showed up couple hours late, after some scouts had hopped on plane heading to a different country to see him there.

He was in the same country, just a totally different city (Cancun vs Mexico City). What a mess. He's going to be lucky to sign by 7/1 at this rate: http://www.baseballamerica.com/today/prospects/international-affairs/2012/2613601.html

Looks like this guy will be cleared to sign in time. Has an OFAC issue that may be handled as early as tomorrow. I'm curious what Badler says in his writeup.

Meant to post this earlier but it's been a hectic day:

Ben Badler[/url]"]• Reports from scouts on 21-year-old Cuban corner outfielder Yasiel Puig have been underwhelming. The Rangers have been the only team linked to Puig, though their senior-level decision makers were not in attendance at his recent workout in Mexico, where teams have reported that his conditioning appears to be an issue. Teams have no performance data or game video to work off from Puig in more than a year because he was suspended for the 2011-12 season in Serie Nacional. The last time any scouts could have legally evaluated Puig was in June 2011 in Rotterdam, where scouts seemed lukewarm at best on him. He's shown plus raw power and hit well in Cuba for a year before his suspension, but there are question marks about both his bat and his rawness in the outfield. How Puig could have acquired permanent Mexican residency documents after having been in the country for what's believed to be less than a month is also a widespread question, though Major League Baseball has yet to declare him a free agent.

@Kevin_Goldstein Big, athletic for size, plus-plus raw power, questions about hit tool. RT @zrod10: @Kevin_Goldstein what's the scouting report?

Ryan Harvey?

It will be interesting to see how his bonus stacks up to Concepcion's, as the relative meh-ness of their prospectdom sounds kind of similar going into the signing.

Assuming Puig is unblocked (now that he's a FA) before July 2, that is.

Ryan Harvey part two seems like a pass to me but even if the Cubs aren't truly interested I'd like to see them stay involved if for no other reason than to drive up the cost to whoever does sign him.

As the wait to get Jorge Soler to Arizona continues, the Chicago Cubs are attempting to add outfielder Yasel Puig to their stable of Cuban prospects.

Puig, only recently declared a free agent, and agent Jaime Torres are attempting to make a deal with a major-league club before next Monday, when MLB will institute signing limits for international players.

An MLB source confirmed that the Cubs are among the teams in contact with Torres, and a source with another team that is believed to be involved said not to rule the Cubs out because of the nine-year, $27 million commitment they made to Soler earlier this month. The Cubs also signed Cuban left-hander Gerardo Concepcion for $6 million in March.

With so little information available on this guy, i'm not jumping to any conclusions based on the brief scouting reports from Goldstein/Badler who pretty much have to put something out there. Not to mention majority of that info is going to be from like 2 years ago.

might as well just sign him for whatever it takes, giving him Soler money is not going to put a dent in the Cubs available money.
