I'm putting this here instead of in our 2012 IFA thread, because he's evidently as good or better than Soler. And evidently, has a possibility somehow of being able to be signed before July 2nd. Another OFer. This could be a very good turn of events for us hopefully. I'd love to get another bigtime prospect somehow.

Is this the guy with the ridiculous numbers that made Cespedes look MEH?

No, but he was pretty good nonetheless.

Cespedes: 403 PA, .333/.424/.667/1.091, 49/40 BB/K, 33 HR, 11/14 SB

Puig: 376 PA, .330/.430/.581/1.011, 49/39 BB/K, 17 HR, 5/9 SB

The other differences here are that Puig is 21 while Cespedes is 26, and Puig appears to be a corner OF while Cespedes is a CF.

EDIT: And for comparison, Jose Abreu: 270 PA, .453/.597/.986/1.583, 33 HR, 58/32 BB/K

More like Cespedes is a "CF" amirite?

If he really wanted to cash in (before the CBA), then what was holding him back from doing this a few weeks ago? Morals?

Uh, it isn't exactly easy to do.

I find it really hard to believe he can skip through this many month long process in this length of time. Mainly, because if he were that far along, a guy with his credentials, would have had teams and the media paying tons of attention to it.

If he misses the deadline, his best scenario is to wait until he's 23 and sign with someone at that point. He'd be a regular FA, instead of being capped by the new IFA rules and he'd probably make what Cespedes or Soler is making, maybe more, instead of the max of 2.9 mill and hoping a team gives up their ability to sign high priced guys next year, by going over and paying the big penalty.

If he missed the 7/2 deadline and really is a first round caliber talent, his best bet might be to establish residency in the U.S. and get drafted in 2013. Not sure on his exact DOB but he's still 21 so he could possibly have to wait a full year beyond the 2013 draft to turn 23.

Also, it's apparently a lot easier and quicker to establish residency in Mexico than the DR, which is why they're even acting as though he has a chance to make it through before 7/2.

Do you not remember the 3 months between when we "signed" Jorge Soler and when we signed Jorge Soler?

That's exactly what he is saying. Why did he wait until now to defect when its unlikely he'll be a FA before the deadline.

But as pointed out above, defecting isn't a matter of saying, 'I think I'll defect from Cuba today'

I for one applaud his patient approach to getting off the island.

If he's gonna walk off the island, we might really have something here.

Cubs amongst teams showing interest in 23-year old Cuban reliever Armando Rivero:

MLB.com[/url]"]Right-handed power arm Armando Rivero, 23, a former member of the Cuban national team, and left-handed pitcher Omar Luis Rodriguez, 19, have drawn interest from several Major League clubs and are on track to sign in the next two weeks, according to an industry source.

The Cubs, Dodgers, Indians, Mets, Yankees and White Sox have all expressed interest in the 6-foot-3, 195-pound Rivero, according to the source. Rivero, who has a body type similar to Texas reliever Mike Adams, starred for the Havana Industriales as a closer and was a teammate of Oakland's Yoenis Cespedes and Texas Minor Leaguer Leonys Martin at the World University Baseball Championships in Japan in 2010.

The right-hander's fastball sits in the low-to-mid 90s and his repertoire also features a two-seam fastball, slider and changeup.

I always thought the front of the Cuba national uniforms looked like they said Cubs. Guess it was closer than I realized!

The bolded is accurate... did anyone actually read the article though?

"He's been planning to leave Cuba for more than a year and I am told he has been caught trying to leave Cuba several times," Torres said. "When he left The Netherlands last year, they suspected he was going to defect and he was suspended. He was reinstated to the reserve team for Cienfuegos, basically Triple-A, and then he was caught trying to leave the country again and suspended from the reserve team again."

I read that and didn't understand it at all. Do you need to be on an active roster, so you can defect in good standing?
