Random observation, but Micah Gibbs has had a power surge this year (SSS, yes). He's got 4 HRs in 60 ABs this year. In 450 previous ABs in the minors, he had 2. What's his upside? Is he a guy with some power? Catchers with power are nice commodities. How is he as a fielder?

Gibbs is a defensive catcher, thought to have 10ish homer pop, if things turned out right. I'd say there's a pretty decent chance he winds up as a major league backup at some point. The current power is probably an aberration, unless we hear he's made major changes.

The .@BoiseHawks are the only team in the entire NWL without a '12 Draft pick. .@Cubs have not assigned one as yet.

I kinda find that surprising for some reason. Is that a result of how much young pitching the Cubs went with early on and the desire to protect arms?

Bruno tweeted that he's going to Boise after a little time in AZ. Same thing, for Johnson, I believe. I think they're just getting guys acclimated before sending them to Boise.

It's because no one has "officially" signed per the Cubs yet. There will be a handful of guys who will join Boise shortly, like Bruno and the seniors who have signed.

Nice to see Baez's OBP about .100 points higher than his BA, even if it's aided by some HBP.

I love Baez's OBP strategy: stare at your homerun over the scoreboard, cuss at the pitcher rounding the bases, promptly get hit in the back the next at bat!

Having fun perusing this link, Baseball America top-100s since 1990:

http://www.baseballamerica.com/today/prospects/rankings/top-100-prospects/all-time.html

With all the talk about Soler/Almora/Baez being top-50 next year, here's the other times the Cubs have had (at least) three top-50 guy:

1990

14. Mike Harkey

22. Ty Griffin

44. Earl Cunningham

70. Rick Wilkins

72. Derrick May

2001

2. Corey Patterson

17. Juan Cruz

22. Hee Seop Choi

37. Ben Christiansen

68. Carlos Zambrano

73. Luis Montanez

2002

2. Mark Prior

6. Juan Cruz

40. Hee Seop Choi

45. David Kelton

48. Bobby Hill

68. Nic Jackson

80. Carlos Zambrano

Check Boston out in Theo's era(and no I haven't looked myself) but they're better to compare than our old regimes.

No doubt. When I look at the Cubs' list, I just can't help but think how bad our organization must have been at development. Then I look at the difference in attitude between Epstein (working hard for every possible little edge) vs. Hendry/MacPhail (just sort of doing whatever they've always done), and it's not hard to see why. I'm really curious what we're going to get out of the guys that Hendry drafted but Epstein and Co. get a chance to develop.

That said, the Theo-Era Red Sox only had three top 50 guys one time:

2008.

4. Clay Buchholz

13. Jacoby Ellsbury

40. Lars Anderson

64. Justin Masterson

73. Jed Lowrie

94. Micheal Bowden

96. Ryan Kalish

I wonder if there's a noticeable difference in Boston's success ratio in developing hitting versus pitching? Top 100 guys is probably too SSS to figure that out too. All I know is reading those articles about what's going on up in Boise makes me soooo much more confident that these guys actually have a plan, instead of whatever it was Hendry's mom and pop group were doing(or not doing).

Concepcion really is going to threaten to finish the season with more R than IP.

I want to believe the whole "he'd dominate if we let him throw his best pitches," but it sounds like coach BS.

This one might be rained out though. Looking ominous.

Just pretend that he was essentially an advanced payment for getting dibs on Soler, and it'll feel better.

I have no clue of the validity on that, but every time he gets lit up...that's what i''ll think.

Baez with a crushed double down the line on the first pitch he saw.

Goldstein and the other guy talked about him a bit on the BP prospects podcast this week. Said that he doesn't have any sort of approach and is just in "see ball, hit ball" mode, but that's fine for now because he's too young to need an approach. It'll come later.

The approach isn't that much of an issue because of the new organizational philosophy of not swinging at balls out of the zone. I have no problem if he's swinging at balls in the zone and laying off pitcher's pitches. Plus he's going to get preached for several years about good strike zone management.

Vitters 2-for-2 now. I noticed that going into today he had a .289 BABIP. That definitely seems a bit low, but I guess it might just be part of his approach. It was .290 last year in AA.

Brett Jackson brettjacksoned. Brettjackson is now a verb for striking out swinging.
