It'd be really cool if Rock turns into a bigtime player.

i'd take him becoming a bat off the bench. just so someone named rock shoulders plays in mlb.

Willson Contreras with a HR today. I hope he can stick at catcher because his bat would make him the best catching prospect in the system now that Castillo and Clevenger have graduated (obviously the best of a very weak position).

Is it safe to assume that BJax probably won't see the majors this year if he keeps striking out like this?

He'll be up in September no matter what, I would think. And probably get a majority of the starts. Who's gonna stand in his way? Joe Mather?

He'll probably be up, not that I really want him to be at this point.

At this point I believe the question is does it really make a difference? Perhaps it's just time to accept the fact that he's always going to swing and miss no matter the level and a few more months at Iowa isn't going to change that. He's pretty much learned what he's going to learn there. If they want to keep him in Iowa for the purpose of service time, that's fine but not because they feel that a few more months in Iowa will magically fix what's plaqued him throughout his career.

It'll be a September call-up. Why would you not want him up then?

When his K rate is already headed in the wrong direction, I hardly feel like it's good for his progress to put him into a scenario where he's likely going to K even more.

i know this has been mentioned before, but the difference between jay jackson coming out of the pen and starting is crazy.

he started on may 6, may 21, may 31, and jun 11. in those games, he gave up 5, 6, 6, and 7 runs. in the games he came out of the bullpen, he gave up 1 run 3 times and 0 runs twice. in three of his relief appearances, he stayed in for longer than two of his starts.

what's the deal?

Well, he either gets a few weeks in the big leagues to get acclimated or he sits in September. Whenever he debuts in the big leagues, his K rate is going to go up.

My hope is he can reduce his K rate between now and his callup to between 22-25% from this point forward. If he can somehow accomplish that, I can see him being a solid MLB starter, with a 27-30% K rate, because of his speed, defense, power, and walk rate. Not a top end guy, but a possible 3-4 WAR guy anyway in his prime.

Mike Safford[/url]"]THE GOOD: The Hawks made a couple solid defensive plays in a tough seventh inning, as Jeimer Candelario made a tough backhanded stab of a line drive for the first out with the bases loaded, then Eduardo Gonzalez made a sliding catch with the sacks full to end the inning. Rock Shoulders and Willson Contreras each hit home runs – both solo shots. Starter James Pugliese picked off a runner at first with a stellar third-to-first move that thwarted a rally.

THE BAD: Amaury Paulino was erratic at times in his two innings of work – allowing a run after two outs in the sixth, then hitting a man, walking two, and hurling a wild pitch in the three-run seventh inning that put the game away. Shawon Dunston Jr. was picked off of first in the eighth inning – with the tying run at the plate.

NOTES: The home run by Shoulders went a long, long, ways – over the right field wall and beyond a 35 foot high protective net, finding its way onto the heavily traveled Interstate 5. It marked his first professional home run after 14 homers in junior college in 2011. The Hawks are in both first and last place in the East Division – as S-K, Eugene, Everett, and Vancouver have all improved to 2-0 on the season.

If this is just who he is and he can't adjust, then you keep him in Iowa because he just isn't good enough for the majors.

If we're talking about September, there's no Iowa after the first few days of the month.

I'm aware of that. Just phrased it badly. Replace "keep him in Iowa" with "keep him off the MLB roster."

We don't know how the new regime will approach September call-ups, but given their hyper-cautious approach, they don't seem like the types to me to give guys a September taste if they aren't truly ready.

Jackson will have about 650 AAA PA's by September, and while we still have concerns about his performance translating to MLB, he's not like Vitters where the results haven't been there. There's little reason to end his season when he can get a taste of MLB pitching, and a sneak peek into how well that performance will translate.

Do you mean "results not being there" in terms of minor league career or this season?

Because depending on how hard you want to normalize their BABIPs, I don't know if there's any difference offensively between Vitters and Jackson at AAA.

Both.

The spread between their AAA LD%(according to First Inning) and BABIP is about the same, so I don't think there's much normalization that bridges the gap between them. The only time Jackson's BABIP has been below .355 was his second half season at AA(first time: .358). Vitters has had a BABIP above .335 once since Boise. Jackson K's on a lot of his at bats and when he makes contact he generally hits the ball very hard(he's also faster than Vitters). Vitters doesn't K nearly as often because he's much more prone to weak contact. It's not luck that's been the difference between them.
