There are plenty of better options vs. wasting more time with Stewart.

wanna bet? FA options are Maicer Izturis, Placido Polanco, Mark Reynolds, Scott Rolen, and Ty Wiggington.

More than likely, this surgery will end his season, so that makes two in a row on this wrist. I'd definitely say this is a dehiblitating type of injury, or has the strong possibility to be. We don't even know if he will be able to play at a high level again.

Like Dave, I thinly there's a good chance he misses the rest of the season. If he comes back next year, we give him another look. If not, and maybe even if he does, Josh Vitters could start next year. If the feel he's not ready, then you find a bridge until he is like Valbuen or Cardenas. There's no reason to spend any amount of money of those guys.

Sounds like they are going to decide at the All-Star break if Stewart is going to have surgery.

Might as well just call up Vitters and see what he can do. I think Stewart is done this season.

Doubtful. If anything, we'll be seeing him in November. For now, I expect to see a lot of Luis Valbuena, although I'd prefer to call back Cardenas to see what he can do as a full time player. There's really no need to play Baker or Mather too much.

that's very optimistic to project the cubs in the world series.

Vitters should not be called up. They'll just play Valbuena and Baker.

Yeah, it's not like Stewart being unavailable is something new. And they haven't missed any production by him being gone. His replacements have probably been a bit better. The last thing you do now is call up Vitters. There's no need. Nothing to be gained. And it will only cost you in the end.

are we ready to admit letting colvin go for ian [expletive] stewart was a bad idea yet

No, and we never will be, because Colvin is a part time player and he's benefited from an extreme home/road split, just like most Colorado players.

Tyler Colvin is a [expletive] burger with extra cheese who had no place on this roster.

pretty sure his .748 away ops destroys anything that bum stewart could muster

also 1.105 ops in june, 1.242 ops in july so far - also 1.083 w/ risp

spin it however you like, but it was an awful trade

This is Colvin's line away from Coors Field:

.273 .288 .416 .703

Worrying about who got the better deal between Tyler Colvin and Ian Stewart is beyond inconsequential. They took a chance on a formerly highly regarded prospect; that doesn't always work out. Fortunately they didn't have to give up anyone of importance to do so.

Those numbers you quote are for 80 PAs, 12 in the month of July. And his BABIP for the season is .100 higher than his career average.

Blind squirrel. Colvin would mean nothing to this Cubs team.

It's another case of judging a trade in hindsight. Stewart's ceiling was and is higher than Colvin's. This being said, the fact that Stewart's going to have this season ending surgery it makes me want to keep him for next year even more. If it turns out that his wrist really was the root of his problems, I'd love to have him when he's fully healthy.

When it comes to trades involving prospects or young "change of scenery" players, you really can't blame the GMs involved for how it all turns out. How many times has a GM been criticized for trading away top prospects for an over priced veteran or a rent a player? remember the prospect package the Pirates got in the Manny/Bay trade? On the other side, what about Mr. Moneyball trading Car Go and Houston Street for Matt Holliday, which ultimately turned into Michael Taylor?

Wait, you can't judge a trade in hindsight or blame a GM for how a trade turns out? You wanna think about that one again?

He would have to think about it for the first time before he thinks about it again.

Not always. Especially if people loved the trade when it happened. In the case of trading a top prospect(s) for a rental, its never a good idea. However, in a deal line Colvin for Stewart in particular. 2 guys who were in need of a change of scenery. At the time, It was viewed as a low risk/high reward for us. I still see it that way, but some disagree. Another example is Rizzo/Cashner. Everyone loves it, but if Rizzo ultimately turns into Russell Branyan, and Cashner an ace, will a trade that Cubs fans unanimously loved all if the sudden be blamed on Theo?

Colvin also has a .357 BABIP (81 points above career average) with a LD% only slightly higher than his career average. Could this be a breakout season? Sure, but it's pretty unlikely and not something that can be accurately predicted given the peripherals.

It's way too early to say it was an awful trade from the Cubs' perspective and the most likely outcome is still that it was a pretty irrelevant deal for both sides.

Why do people even bother worrying about Tyler Colvin's numbers?

He blows.

Process >>>>>>>>> Outcome

Oh, that's right. when you evaluate a process, you entirely ignore the outcome. don't collect information about the outcome b/c that can't inform your process evaluation.
