DFA doesn't mean released, btw. If some team claims him off waivers, then sure. Otherwise, he could go to the minors.

It's an audition process this year. If signing all these DFA's result in one longterm piece for us, even as a reliever or bench guy, it's totally worth it. Glad they're so active.

DFAd relievers aren't going to be longterm pieces. When you "hit" on one of them it's for the short-term.

I certainly don't care enough to look that type of thing up, but this Asencio guy, for instance, hasput up excellent numbers in AAA, isn't very old, and has years of control left. Not saying he'll pan out, but it's conceivable he could become a legit bullpen piece for 3-4 years.

Yeah, relievers of all people are wildcards. Look at Axford's path to the Brewers, or any one of dozens of other relievers.

Can't he accept the assignment and go right down? I wouldnt be surprised if he was ok with going down considering where his career is at currently.

Eh ... more intriguing than Bowden ... but he's basically a more polished Marcus Hatley right now. Guess they get to plug and play a guy, while not having to rush up pen arms that could use more seasoning (like Hatley/Cabrera).

He has to clear waivers before he can accept the assignment. Sometimes, players are given the option to reject the assignment and become a FA if they aren't claimed, but I wouldn't be surprised if Bowden went down to the minors given the opportunity.
