Koyie Hill was everything I remembered him to be. It was fitting that he was able to end the rally. Good times!

someday we will have a gm who is immune to the allure of the aged white scrapper guy who somehow "plays the game the right way" despite completely sucking.

unfortunately, between this and reed johnson, it's pretty apparent that we don't have that gm today.

Amen brother, I think that Epstein and Hoyer deserve some criticism for this move. Koyie Hill is garbage. Any other catcher in our minor league system would have been serviceable for this short period of time that Castillo and Clevenger are out.

Seriously, I've made fun of it, was pissed about it and even booed the damn thing. However, Theo and Jed literally had less than a day to make a trade here. We lost 3 damn catchers. Finding a guy you can get for nothing is about all a noncontending team should try to do. What costs nothing? Koyie Hill, that's what. Hell, they may have even gained some currency with Dempster, for bringing in his buddy, that helps allow them to deal him later on. But Hill? He'll be DFA'd as soon as 2 of our guys are back. Yeah, he's awful, but he's going to be here for a week or so, only because we lost each catcher that was on our 40 man within a few weeks. Edited by davell

oh i don't disagree that we were up [expletive] creek without a paddle with our top 3 catchers all out injured, but couldn't it have been someone other than koyie hill? the guy just [expletive] sucks, and what's worse is that we have had to watch him [expletive] suck for our team for 5 years. i would have preferred pretty much any bad AAA catcher over koyie hill. at least then we'd be watching someone different strike out or hit a dribbler to the second baseman.

Koyie knows the majority of our pitching staff working with them before. You needed someone to come in and play right away on short notice so Koyie was the ideal guy. I hate Koyie but I understand why they did it.

Yeah, I'll admit that considering that Castillo could escape DL time and Clevenger could be back next weekend, we would not have been able to get anything better, at least not giving up something of value. There's really no point in giving up anything for a week of a catcher on a team like this. Would the Brenley kid be any better? Doubtful. And I don't speak a ton of Spanish, but I'm pretty sure that Apodaca pretty much translates to "just as bad as Koyie Hill that doesn't know our pitching staff", which is important.I hate the fact that he's back and I hope it's as short a stint as possible, but I understand it. It's just that he's a very strong representation and reminder of all of those little things that the old regime did wrong.

Bob Brenley would be better. :yahoo:

It may be an irrelevant move but you know if this were Hendry people would be flipping out.
only because if it were Hendry, Hill would have started the season with the big league club and be sporting a new 2-3 year deal worth between 3 and 6 million

michael brenly has like a .550 ops in tennessee, so no. he wouldn't be better.

He's pretty much to AA what Koyie Hill is to the big leagues. A backup catcher to keep around until his roster spot is needed for a better option.

Not that I'm arguing we should have called up Brenly or anything, but:

Koyie Hill this season: .591 OPS in AA

Mike Brenly this season: .561 OPS in AA

In all honesty, I have no problem with this move. I'm not happy that Koyie is back, but for a stopgap who will only be around for a week or two and a team that isn't close to contending, the primary motivation should be giving up as little as possible in terms of assets. That's exactly what Hoyer did.

Hill has a history of minor league numbers that Mike Brenly doesn't. This isn't a defense of Koyie Hill so much as it's a declaration of how horrible Mike Brenly is.

Right, which is one reason why Hill is very likely to be better than Brenly in the majors. I was just pointing out that citing Brenly's AA OPS through a month and a half isn't especially meaningful, especially when the guy you're comparing him to is 33 and was having nearly as horrid a start to the year as Brenly was.

Hill is a better option than Brenly, but there's a lot more reasons why than Brenly's poor AA OPS only.

The national emergency is over. The Cubs are good again an will now make an improbable playoff run including a 63 game win streak. All is right in the world again. Democrats will hug republicans. Muslims, Jews, and Hindus will rejoice together. Cats will hug dogs. Dogs will hug postmen.

I think it's time for Koyie to hang em' up. I'm sure he can get a job teaching grit to young catchers in someone's minor league system.
