My Cardinals fan buddy texting me last night about how sports suck last night just made my weekend. He's been convinced for some time that the Cardinals aren't going to do anything in the playoffs, and Martinez going down, and Rosenthal's blow up last night just sent him right over the [expletive] edge. He's a good friend, and normally I wouldn't take joy in his pain, but [expletive] the Cardinals.

I don't know if I could be friends with a Cardinal fan. It might be a litmus test for me.

He'd have to have a great personality. Personality goes a long way. He'd have to be one charming mother [expletive] Cardinal's fan. I mean he'd have to be 10 times more charming Jon Hamm.

I was taking some [expletive] from a Cardinals fan last Friday (How does it feel to be about to win 90 games and know you're still third in your own division,) (You know they're going to get into the one-game and then lose, they're the cubs) etc, and I mean, I dunno, it doesn't really bother me so I just laugh, haha, yeah good one, loveable losers, etc.

And then he said "well I used to be a red sox fan but I switched to the cardinals after the whole beer and fried chicken thing" and I knew I had a new mortal enemy

Did you ask him how he felt about beer in the clubhouse creating a carcass that did not belong to a chicken but a redbird?

Living in the middle of the state, it's tough...it's a really even split of Cubs/Cards fans.

My in-laws are Cardinal fans too. Not a big problem with the Father and Mother in law, but my brother in law...he gets mouthy.

I did some utility work for an ESPN college football game Saturday and wore my Cubs hat. One of my coworkers was a Pirates fan. We shared thoughts on Arrieta vs. Cole. I said they have a real shot to overtake the Cards but he didn't seem convinced. He seemed scared about Jake (justifiably so). I said Cole is a tough opponent too. I don't know where this is going. He was a nice fan and we had a gentlemenly discussion about baseball. There was no stupidity. Sorry that was boring.

Mark Derosa eviscerated Papelbon this morning, it was beautiful. Griping about relievers hanging out in the dugout until the 5th inning and eating sandwiches and getting rub downs until they decide to go watch some of the game. Then Mike Stanton called into the mlb radio morning show, which is generally good to quite good, and ripped HARPER OF ALL PEOPLE. "The Nats will never win if Harper is their leader." "Even if its an easy popup he should run, maybe not 100 percent but at least 60 percent would be ok"

I'm only friends with one (mostly coincidence, I haven't run into many). and he's pretty good-humored and, thankfully, can actually trade barbs with me and other Cubs friends of mine without resorting to 1908 garbage.

Even though I knew it was coming, the sheer amount of hot taking here in the DC-area over this is just insane. I've heard multiple callers gripe about how Harper "disappeared when they started to struggle" or how he "pulled an ARod and was only good when it didn't matter.

OK, so August was his worst month this year. He hit .327 .460 .449 .909. September? His second best month at .370 .509 .827 1.336 with 10 HR. He's been demolishing opponents when they've NEEDED IT THE MOST. I really, really hope this ends up pushing him away from DC.

My favorite stat line of the year:

3.10 ERA, 3.48 FIP, 4.08 xFIP, 3.3 fWAR, 197 IP, 7.48 K/9............and a 5-17 record. Shelby Miller, ladies and gentlemen
