THIS IS BIG NEWS PEOPLE.

http://espn.go.com/boston/mlb/story/_/id/7911759/report-josh-beckett-boston-red-sox-played-golf-2-days-missed-start

And he presumably got a stiff back doing so causing him to miss a start. And people in Boston are acting like the sky is falling. I mean seriously. Golf? They're upset about someone playing golf? On an off day?

This whole stigma attached to players who injure themselves not playing baseball is a bit ridiculous. "HE SHOULDN'T HAVE BEEN PLAYING GOLF!" Yes, he should have. Because it's an off-day, and he can do whatever the [expletive] he wants, and golf is a low impact sport that shouldn't normally cause injury to an athletic individual. Do these fans expect their players to live in plastic bubbles off the field? These level of safety precautions that these fans demand the players take is borderline insanity to me. Let themn live their own damn life.

Golf. Really, Boston? STFU. Some gems form the comments on the ESPN article...

This is why you don't pay above average players (with no work ethic) superstar dollars. Ridiculous -- in an ideal world, this guy would be cut with no more money guaranteed, and a hungry up-and-comer would be given a shot to make the roster in his place.

it could have been worse,he could of had six pack of beer, and a BECKETT of chicken on the greens!!!!

Trade Beckett and fire Valentine!

Beckett deserves to be cut and Valentine fired, the team clearly doesn't want to play for him, nor can he manage a group of grown babies.

If he was too flippin sore to pitch, he was too flippin sore to golf- get this bum and the rest of garbage out of boston. I don't care if they have a teams of rookies, I'll watch them before I pay any money to watch these bozos

Dude gets paid 17 million a year and he's out playing golf during the season. As a professional athlete, you shouldn't play any other sport while your season is going on. Thing is he misses his start but still gets paid. That's just disrespectful to the organization and the fans.

Beckett's a whiny little d0uch3. Always has been, always will be.

See I wouldn't give a crap if he was golfing everyday if he was pitching lights out...but he's not and he needs to take those off days to study game films and work with the catchers and work out to get stronger and build up stamina for the rest of the year or something instead of screwing around.

I don't really agree that golf shouldn't be expected to cause injury. I could see all kinds of pulled back muscles and crap like that happening as the result of a golf swing.

Don't disagree BUT you have to question his conditioning in general then.

Those were all dumb, but I kind of agree with this one. Note that I said kind of before you destroy me.

I read that and said to myself "Well what the hell is he doing during the games he isn't pitching?". The entire team had a day off. They play baseball 162 times a year, they get 19 days off during that span (counting the ASB). That's 19 days over 6 months that they have to do whatever they want. I seriously doubt they want to go back to the stadium and study film.

EDIT: And by "I read that" I meant the original statement, not yours.

which has been questioned his entire career.

So apparently he didn't get injured because he played golf, it's that he played golf AFTER he was pulled for having an injury that caused him to miss a start

The newest controversy swirling about the Boston Red Sox involves pitcher Josh Beckett playing a round of golf the day after missing a start because of a strained latissimus muscle behind his right shoulder.

That's what I thought happened when I first saw the story. If he got hurt playing 18 holes on a day off? Oh well, injuries happen in odd places, and golf isn't exactly a high-risk activity. If he played 18 holes after hurting his arm/shoulder? You're a dummy and deserve the fan rage headed your way.

Yeah, that's a problem.

Weird. It's a conflicting report...

That's the article I pulled the quote from, but ESPN has this all over...

Two days before he missed a start because of stiffness in his right lat muscle, Boston Red Sox starter Josh Beckett was playing golf, according to 98.5 The Sports Hub.

So which was it. 2 days before he missed a start or the day after? Day after, yeah I tend to agree that there should be some anger. It either means he wasn't really hurt and didn't feel like pitching, or he was just being a pansy and not pitching through what was probably minor pain. 2 days before? Chalk it up to bad luck. Like falling out of a hot tub.

Now that I think about it, didn't something similar come up with Beckett in the past?

He does like to leave his residence a little much for my taste.

And when he does, he engages in activities. It's very disturbing.

Clearly this is a man who just doesn't think of the children.

Sorry I think a little of the outrage is justified. He could have at least said in his postgame interview that he understands...that he gets it...that he gets how it looks. But no.

No. You question the mechanics of his swing. It only takes once out of 80+ swings over a 4-hr time frame.

The outrage is because they are 12-19 and in last place. Flip that record around and Beckett's golf outing isn't even noticed.

It's not that he played golf, its his defiance. In the eyes of Boston fans, he doesn't get it. They just want him to understand the context of the situation, which he is too stupid to do.

That and...the other thing. That really hurts the most. But second, is the defiance.

I wonder if this happens if he's playing in Chicago. NY definitely. Chicago probably. A place like Atlanta, no way.

I can't believe this is such an issue. And the national media is getting on him too. Mike and Mike were all over him.

Pitchers play golf between starts all the time. Maddux, Glavine and Smoltz played insane amounts of golf during the season. Always had their clubs with them. When did all the Boston meatheads get their MDs and do the physical exam on Beckett so they could decide that golf could aggravate a pitching injury. I don't get it.
