While I understand that Dempster wants to take his time, he has to understand that the Cubs front office will be upset with him, the Braves front office will be upset with him and Cubs fans will as well.

I hope this doesn't happen, but if Theo & Jed aren't able to move him by the deadline what do you think happens? Do you think there will be any repercussions for Dempster from Theo & Jed?

I know he is a reasonable man. But this is all based on speculations (or reports) that he was very much OK with Atlanta as a destination. I'm hoping the reasonable side of him comes through and accepts a trade to Atlanta (a well run team and contender) before it severely hurts the Cubs prospects. The word was he wanted a really good player coming back as part of his legacy. Delgado is exactly that. Someone we can root for, for 5+ years.

But listening to his comments this afternoon don't you get the impression he was actively trying to scare Atlanta off? He said he might take all week trying to come to a decision. That would be the best possible thing to say if you didn't want to go to Atlanta. I understand he would rather go to LA more than ATL, but his comments make it seem like if he can't go to LA he doesn't want to go anywhere.

And now the cats out of the bag that he doesn't want Atlanta, so our offer from the Dodgers will even be worse. Thanks Ryan.
Stop it. They didn't trade him last time for a [expletive] offer, I hardly think they will trade him this time for a worse than [expletive] offer.

They may have no choice if he'll only sign off on LA. There only other option is to hold him and hope he declines arbritration. Or hold him and just send a message to other teams that you won't trade rentals for [expletive], but I'm not sure how that helps the Cubs in the long run.

What can they do really? Sit him? I don't think that's likely.

They can let the people in this thread throw rotten vegetables at him. Even that's too good for him, this is 2012.

Or they could say Ryan Dempster will be the starter for the remainder of the year.

You do know that they don't have to trade Dempster, right?

Well Ned Colletti is still on the other side of negotiations here so, as always, don't rule anything out. We might get him to take Dempster, Soriano, and Marmol (along with taking on their full salaries) and give us Lee, Eovaldi, Gould and Webster

They can give him a qualifying offer and then take a 1st round pick or get Dempster back to do the same thing again next year.

They have a choice they can simply keep him make him a qualifying offer at the end of the season and get a draft pick. I realize some people think its likely he'd just accept a one year deal but I don't think that's likely.

And Dempster's 35, what are the odds he'll be leading the league again in ERA next year? Odds are he won't be worth nearly as much next year as this year. This sucks.

So you're upset that Dempster is having a good year this year?

They didn't take the previous poor offer because it appeared there were other alternatives. If Demp shoots this trade down, then there are no other options for the Cubs.

No, I'm upset that we will never get a deal nearly as good as Delgado for him.

No he's upset that Dempster is having his best year and we won't be able to acquire top-shelf talent in return because he is being a &*%$

Teams don't get 1st round picks anymore, they just disappear now.

Supplemental picks still exsist.

At his age Dempster would be pretty crazy to turn down the opportunity for one last long term deal coming off a banner year to accept 1 year of arby.

Is a team at all likely to give up a first round pick and the draft pool money that comes with it for a 36 year old pitcher? And keeping Demp so we have first dibs (or a guaranteed shot) at him in the offseason is of very little value to a team in the position the Cubs are in.

He'd also be crazy to pass on one more shot at a playoff team, but here we are.

My mistake. Better wording, the Cubs can say that if Dempster wants to destroy the Cubs leverage by declining a trade, they'll destroy his free agent value by making a qualifying offer.

Yes, supplemental picks DO exist. But an acquieing team is NOT going to give up THEIR 1st rounder for a 36 year old Ryan Dempster. It'd take away their 1st round allotment and they'd have nothing to spend on the draft. Yes, you do this for Hamels or Greinke. Not for Ryan Dempster. We offer him that qualifier, he's staying and doesn't have any options, other than that.

Yeah, he's not going to outright veto Atlanta now. He's just going to drag his feet until the Cubs and Atlanta move on.

Whoofda, if Hoyer/Theo do not think they are compensated by the trading partner equitably then they can keep Dempster. In the offseason they can offer him a 1 year contract that he will likely decline and they can get a supplemental 1st round pick for him. Said pick may turn out to be better than whoever the trading partner was willing to give. That will be up to Hoyer/Theo to decide.

Slow down a little.

We could also say we are playing for next year and thus we need his rotation spot and we'd enjoy having him stay but it would be in a bullpen role.
