it could be that they are thinking about bringing up Cardenas sooner than later and will showcase DeWitt in hopes that he can make himself somewhat attractive as a trade chip before they just DFA him. Now as I recall, while DeWitt's an awful defensive 2B, he's somewhat respectable at 3rd so maybe that's where they should play him.
