Soto traded? Released? Clevenger sent down? Someone DL'd?

I guess someone is hurt, unless we're making a habit of trading guys at their lowest possible value. That said, I'm looking forward to seeing Castillo.

Did Soto get injured? If Soto is hurt or is traded, which catcher starts out of Castillo and Clevenger? A month or so ago, I think the answer would have been Castillo, but Clevenger has been pretty good so far.

Did you really ask if Soto was released?

No. He didn't. You must be crazy

Well damn, sucks for Clevenger. Hopefully he's back soon. I also hope we give Castillo the bulk of the starts while he's up.

There's no reason Castillo should be getting more starts than Soto right now.

Hooray, a sane person in this thread.

Why not? Soto is not good and he's not getting better. He's 29 years old and is not part of our future. What's wrong with seeing what Castillo can do?

Soto is not as bad as he has been so far this year, plus he plays a position where there are potential trade partners in waiting. Even if you have decided he isn't part of the future, you let him normalize so you can get more in trade return, you don't bench him, especially in a lost year. There is literally no reason whatsoever to bench him this early, or anytime soon. To do so would be moronic.

He's a career .800 OPS player coming off a strong spring. You don't toss him in the bin three weeks into a season when he's OPSing under .500. If it's midseason and he's still sporting a .464 OPS, revisit this. But he won't be.

But nobody can deny that Castillo should be getting substantial playing time if he's going to be here. Soto needs playing time to if nothing else try and build his trade value, but Castillo shouldn't be wasting away on the bench, especailly if he is to be our starting catcher by the end of this year. It could be argued that Castillo probably wasn't the best guy to call up if he's to be used as a standard backup catcher. I suppose Blake Lalli probably would have been the better option if they wanted a guy to play once a week.

Yes, everyone can and should "deny" it if he's only up here to cover a DL stint. Soto's likely not long for this team (in the big picture sense) and Castillo will get plenty of starts once he's gone. He's not "wasting away" playing as a backup while Clevenger is injured.

There will be plenty of time for Castillo to audition for the starting job. Since Castillo wouldn't be up if not for the injury, and since Clevenger only figures to be out for a short time, Castillo will be fine taking Clevenger's at bats and nothing more.

I simply don't agree. Soto should be given as much time to get out of his funk as needed as long as he's on the team. Castillo should be starting regularly wherever he is. I just don't agree with either using Castillo as a backup or an even platoon. I think there's an open 40 man spot, so just roster Lalli and when we want the spot back take him off and if someone claims him, more power to them.

Soto needs to get on track before he's dealt, no doubt about it. But, right now, it's very likely that Castillo helps us win more games than Soto does, unless he cools off. Yes, he'll have plenty of time later to prove himself, but I see nothing wrong with giving him plenty of at bats while he's up.
