With the way this Reds game is going, I would have to say the Astros series. Sad to say, they just look like a triple A team out there. Need some big free agents and more minor league talent comparable to Starlin. Give Theo a few seasons.

Eh, I think they will win the series against Cincinnati this weekend. Dusty will find a way to make it happen. \:D/

Nope. Still waiting. Will it happen in the next series against STL? I wouldnt bet on it.

That's a nice thing to say, but much as I dislike the meatball population, they are a component of the buying public. And they're already not very happy. I think the empty seats around home plate are an adequate demonstration of that. Think about how things will be if we aren't in 2012, but 2014, and still not close to a division title....

I'm not among them, but Theo & company need to be concerned not only with those who understand what they are trying to do, but also with those who don't care about a master plan, and want to always win now.

It's not an easy job, this thing Theo & his crew have taken on. It might not be clear right now. Give it a year or two, and without a quality competitor.......things will get very uncomfortable around here.

If we're going to suck, which we do obviously, part of me wants epic suckage. Like, let's not even win a series this year.

Eh?

They're already blowing it up as fast as they can. What would even more suckage produce?

A twisted (no way that's the right word but whatever) form of entertainment for myself. I have an interest in historically bad sports teams so a 40 win season would be more interesting than a 65-70 win season. That's all in a vacuum though. A season like could possibly hurt attendance and payroll and could keep good players from wanting to play here and what not.

And, you know, you'd watch your team lose 30 more games.

But hey... Look on the bright side, Cubs would have the #1 pick and most money for IFA next year...

But hey... Look on the bright side, Cubs would have the #1 pick and most money for IFA next year...

Out of the last 30 years of teams picking No. 1 overall:

23 were made by teams that did not subsequently win a World Series

The 1981 Twins selected Tim Belcher, who did not sign. They went on to win two World Series under the guidance of Andy MacPhail, who then took his two WS rings to the Cubs, where he significantly expanded the scouting infrastructure and promised to build a long-term winner through the farm system.

The 1984 Mets selected Shawn Abner and then won the 1986 World Series. Abner was never a factor in the major leagues and never played for the Mets.

The 1990 Braves selected Chipper Jones, who was instrumental in the team's long-term run and World Series championship.

The 1991 Yankees selected Brien Taylor, who is going to be joined by Matt Bush as the only top overall picks to not make the major leagues. They went on to win a bunch of titles anyway.

The 1992 Phillies selected Pat Burrell, and he was still around and moderately useful when the won the World Series in 2008, his final year with the team.

The 1995 Angels selected the pride of Jamestown, North Dakota, and he was a moderately useful contributor to their 2002 World Series team.

The 2000 Marlins selected Adrian Gonzalez and traded him in 2003 for Uggie Urbina. The Marlins were mysteriously declared the 2003 World Series champions despite the season having been abandoned after Game 5 of the NLCS.

Doesn't mean anything, I was just curious about the trivia of it all. Also, I'm a little surprised that Dunston was only worth 10.0 bWAR in his career.

Unfortunately you missed the 2000 Marlins with Adrian Gonzalez.

And the '83 Twins with Tim Belcher.

And Burrell was drafted in '98.

Is this a preview of the newest angle of your anti-Theo shtick?

Not exactly. It's not new (I brought it up even before he was hired) and it's not really anything against him (because it really has nothing to do with how well Epstein does his job), but I have thought that the parallels are interesting.

Do you know what this list represents? It's the Cardinals last 16 series, all won.... 16 strait w/o a loss. They are well aware of this fact and dam sure don't want to lose tonite. But that won't be easy with Wainwright and his deminished stuff.

I got a big kick out of seeing the guys celebrate last nite. Mather's GWH was the only play Sportcenter showed of the game, then the celebration. I'm sure the Cubs are ready to win a series, and all things point to tonite.

I won't go as far as to say it's a MUST win, but with Berkman and Jay out, Holliday not hitting his weight, Beltran in a mini-funk unable to hit breaking stuff and Freese gently floating back to earth and AW starting, it is definately DOABLE.

The Cardinals don't need any of them when they have

But there's more: Boggs and Motte won't be available either...the 2nd string will have to relieve AW who even if effective(unlikely) will be on a pitch count....I'm guessing between 70 to 80.

Cubs are a 3 to 2 favorite. Only the 2nd time this year the Cards are dogs (Greinke the other)

I'm calling it: Cubs win 6-3

Does the Pride of Jamestown, North Dakota have a name?

Yes.

Hint: He is also known for kicking a football.

All of these hopeful reasons to win are why they will lose tonight.

Yeah, yeah I know. The eternal pessimism of the true blue Cub fan.

I only made 4 or 5 baseball bets all last year. Won them all. All with my landlord who is not so much of a Card fan, just a Cub hater. I mean HATER. He gave me 2 to 1 and I can't pass that up. We bet 1/2 the rent, and I cannot afford to lose!

Cubs win 6-3 :beg:
