No one really knows, although AzPhil wasn't too intrigued with his spring. Simpson in the rotation at least clears up some mystery on the Daytona rotation. My guess is that Kirk has been bumped to the pen for now. I highly doubt that the new regime is going to want their trade target (Cates) or their high cost international signing (Concepcion) out of the rotation for now, unless one of them is injured.

Wang relieves Rosario after 5.1.

Rosario allows only two hits, and has a 12/2 G/A ratio. Interesting numbers, he must have gotten a lot of quick groundouts to pitch into the 6th innings on the first-week pitch counts. Although 3 walks and a HBP and only 2 K's isn't super impressive.

Wang (1.2), Reed (1.0), and McKirihan (1.0) provide 3.2 innings of perfect relief.

Ladies and Gentlemen, Hayden Simpson has just thrown a 1-2-3 inning, presumably his first ever.

Sweet.

Any velocity reports or something else we can pick at?

I can't find anything.

Random tweet that may or may not be accurate.

Hayden Simpson 2 complete innings fastball is at 86 mph.

What was his velocity when he was drafted?

That report would certainly explain his 4th inning:

Brevard County Bottom of the 4th

Cody Hawn homers (1) on a fly ball to right field.

Miguel Velazquez grounds out, second baseman Rubi Silva to first baseman Greg Rohan.

Michael Walker strikes out swinging.

Shea Vucinich singles on a line drive to left fielder John Andreoli.

Reggie Keen singles on a soft fly ball to right fielder Elieser Bonne. Shea Vucinich to 2nd.

Adam Weisenburger flies out to center fielder Matthew Szczur.

91-94, topping out at 96 and fading late in certain starts into the 80s.

Hayden Simpson would look a lot better were he Taijuan Walker.

Heck, I'd settle for Christian Yelich, Zach Lee, Nick Castellanos, etc. It's easier to see a guy bust if he was drafted where he was expected to and not 3 rounds lower.

Yep. Hopefully that's the last time we reach.

I also hope it's the last time we spend a first on a guy who we see throw a complete game one night in a college tournament and then have him come back the same weekend to pitch relief, even if he is in the mid-90's the 2-3 days later. The very usage that really showed him off to Wilken may have also been the very weekend that messed up his arm.

The radio announcer was saying that he had pin-point control early on with both fastball and breaking stuff.

I know there were reports that he was throwing 94 comfortably in Arizona this winter/spring, but I'd been told that the velocity disappeared over the course of camp.

There has been talk of Beeler being a guy who might break out. And some talk of him having an improved and effective slider to go with his sinker. But as with last year, no K's and piles of hits.

Might that be a stamina issue resulting from such little work over the past couple years? I suppose the fact he was still capable of reaching the mid-90s is some consolation.

Was at the Peoria game, Eduardo Gonzalez HR was a bomb to dead center. Rosario gave up a HR that was the only hard hit ball, mostly routine grounders. The lefty that finished out the game for Beloit looked real good.

Any gun on Rosario? Any hint of an obvious and effective breaking ball? (I know for a lot of slider guys, it's hard to distinguish the slider from their 2-seamer or whatever.)

Did Liria or Wang have any noteworthy breaking pitches?

In case anyone was wondering, Casey Weathers still has no idea where the ball is going when he throws it. Fortunately for him, he wasn't the worst Tennessee pitcher today. That goes to Daniel Berlind, who managed to get 2 outs in the 6th in between 7 hits, a walk, and 8 runs.

Vitters with the day off.

Seems odd after only 2 games. Hope that it is not another injury.

Yeah, that's the only reason I posted it. I can't deny injury was the first thing I thought of when I saw him out of Iowa's lineup.

The worst part about Simpson is that he does have some talent. He's got an athletic delivery and I thought he had a nice loose arm action which gave him some good stuff.

Still think there's some hope...especially if he was hitting the 90s in between this year and last. Would really suck for him to be a complete miss.
