I wonder how much of an effect certain embarrassing events had on the Angelo decision today. His tenure has been littered with occasional things like the Tank Johnson situation, the James Starks accident, the Ravens draft trade fiasco, with the Sam Hurd incident being the last most glaring example. I don't think it had a huge effect on the decision, but with the Bears being an image conscious organization, I'm sure that played into the decision somehow.

I'm sure it did, but you are going to have a tough time running an NFL team for a decade without having multiple embarrassing situations pop up.

I think the "stale" factor is real, plus the Hanie disaster. Hopefully somebody in charge sees a chance to win now with a franchise QB and still formidable defensive players.

This has been a truly bizarre thread.

I'm glad to see Angelo go simply because I believe that offensive line makes or breaks any football team. A good o line makes all of the skill players, especially the QB, look better. It also helps take pressure off the defense by being able to run the ball and hold a lead.

Angelo made some good picks in the mid rounds and he got Cutler and Peppers. That's not all that impressive of a resume. The fact that there are worse options doesn't justify keeping a GM that hasn't done what we want which is buld a perennial contender.

I have been obsessed with the offensive line, but the Bears were really good last year with a terrible one.

oh jeez, are we going back to the days where everybody is going to obsess over the need for a tight end?

the TE position just seems to be a poor reason to criticize martz. if you're going to criticize him, criticize him for something else.

Here's a slapdash list of guys that I'd be interested in looking at for OC:

Tom Clements - Green Bay QB Coach

Norv Turner

Peter Carmichael Jr - Saints OC

Rob Chudzinksi - Carolina OC

Marty Mohrinweg - Eagles OC, doubtful he comes available looks like Reid is keeping his job

Al Borges - Michigan OC

Jeremy Bates name was attached to the job the last time around because he worked with Cutler in Denver. He's available but got fired by Seattle so not sure on how how a candidate he will be.

he drafted 16 pro bowlers, which might not be a great resume, but it's certainly not unimpressive as far as league GMs go.

i think the offensive line is fixed, actually. we lost our best 2 offensive linemen this year.

I just hate that we had to trade away a pretty good young TE that wanted to be here and had good chemistry with the QB so that we could utilize Martz for one more season. Now we don't have Martz and I'm sure one of the things the new OC is going to want is a pass catching TE.

Why would we get those guys to make lateral moves here? Especially with a new GM and Lovie's status up in the air. Two years ago you couldn't even get position coaches to take the job, which is why they settled on Martz.

Considering the best offenses in the league today feature a dynamic TE(i.e. Finley, Graham, Gronkowski) yes, yes we are.

GB won the Superbowl without Finley last year, and he only had 750ish yards this year. The Giants, Steelers and Eagles were also top 10 offenses without dynamic TEs.

Not sure why a guy that is already an NFL OC would want to come to the Bears, especially from a team with more offensive talent, like the Saints.

Why can't you critisize Martz over the TE position? His offense ignores it in the passing game. That's a proven fact. I dont' care about Greg Olsen, I didn't think he was an elite TE, but shoot, if we would have had Jimmy Graham on our roster, Martz would have ignored him.

Carmichael and Clements aren't the play callers. I figured there was no way Norv wouldn't become available but you're right, it's just broke that he somehow has retained his job. Chud is a hot candidate probably will go straight to an HC position. I figured Mohrinweg would become available but Reid saved his job.

I've always liked Borges. He runs a pro scheme and has developed QBs.

That was probably my biggest complaint, because I didn't think Martz was going to be back. Either he'd have a good year and be in-line for some college head coaching gig, or he'd have a bad year an be fired. I hated that Olsen deal.

It's nit-picky nonsense. The Bears didn't struggle because of some sort of snubbing of the tight end position. They struggled because the offensive line was terrible and they had no receivers.

No way. It's a 5 man grouping, Webb is still a mess and Garza is going to need to be replaced soon. Two spots might be fixed, but there are 3 that remain in flux.

Yeah...Webb is a prayer every time the ball is snapped.

don't worry, the next guy can trade Carolina a 2nd rdr to get him back.

But actually, the first complaint a new OC will have is where the hell are our wide receivers???

Not sure how you define "dynamic", but Celek and Ballard were both beasts this year. Miller less so, but he's steady/reliable and can hurt you if you vacate the short-middle because you are worried about the Wallace's and Brown's of the world.(see the Eagles game earlier this season).

That said, I think Kelen Davis could be a useful target in the right offense. He's not going to line-up in the slot like Finley does, but he's a big target.

That said, having a guy like Finley or Vernon Davis creates mismatches in the slot if you put a LB or S on them. They have to be covered in a zone or by a CB.
