they identified him as a player that they wanted and they took him. why would they take another player that they didn't like as much if they thought he'd be gone in the 6th?

Because he wasn't worth a 4th round pick. You can't just blindly identify guys you like and take them ASAP. It's horrible strategy and completely idiotic.

yeah, you take guys you don't like, that makes a lot of sense.

Even if every [expletive] on your roster is dead, you don't pick one when your oline is as miserable as the Bears and you can get a value pick like Massie

Sure thing, jaydee...

the bears need a starting left tackle, they don't need depth on the o-line, they have depth pretty much up and down that line, but nobody that can protect jay's blind side. there is no one left that offers them that, after passing on reiff and adams.

they've taken a couple of offensive weapons for jay, and some projectable defensive players, one i disagree with taking, the other one has some very desirable qualities for a zone scheme. i see the sense in taking hardin, he's fast and big and can probably start across from peanut or at least line up at safety.

That is dumb. Nobody said that. If you didn't like any other players there you aren't a good scout. This is tunnel vision. Emery said he watched more temple games than anybody, it's pretty clear he has an observational and/or selection bias. It was a bad pick.

you said that. the assumption that they took a guy in the 4th round that was behind someone that they liked more is idiotic. you can question their evaluation of talent, but not their strategy.

If you think there is a decent chance Rodriguez is available in the 6th, you take someone else that probably won't be in the 4th. There's no way Rodriguez is THE missing link to this being a SB team, so if you miss on him, who really cares? Grab something else.

Ding. Ding. Ding. You take a player because he's the best player on the board that fits a role on your team. You don't take a player because he "might not be there" by the next time you pick.

On the other hand, if you think he's the best player on the board, but would probably be available later, but not when you pick next, then you don't take the risk of trying to take him later just because he could be there.

Like sulley said, at that point you question their talent evaluation if you don't like it... not the strategy.

If they had a 5th and were pretty sure he would slip to the 5th despite them thinking he was the best, then they might take someone else.

I simply cannot fathom evaluating Rodriguez higher than Massie, given our team needs.

This draft was seriously from outer space. I have no idea what Emery is trying to do. I can see Jeffrey, but McClellin was completely ludicrous. And now this.

With the addition of Marshall, Jeffery, and McClellin and with Jay coming back... I'm more excited for this coming Bears season than any in recent memory.

If McClellin and Jeffery both become solid starters and we get a few solid seasons out of 2 more guys, then this draft is a success. If not, it's not. The main thing this draft has proved is Emery goes off his own board and not a consensus. We'll know early on if he's right or not.

Emery is just trying to prove how much smarter he is than everyone else. Get used to it.

Yeah, this sounds like something we're going to see in coming years too.

Hyperbole IMO.

Right, and it's his call to make. If the guys succeed he's a hero and if they suck he won't be around long. I'm hoping he's right!

Well that's simply wrong.

First of all, it's about the likelihood that his picks will turn out a success.

Secondly, even if he turns out to be a relatively poor GM, the Bears may very well hang on to him anyway.

Bennett now as the #3 threat in defensive game planning. He could have a huge season playing against nickelbacks. Assuming Jeffery puts forth the effort.

What's wrong about him being a hero if the players he drafts succeed? I guess it would just be luck since he went against Mel Kiper? He's already a terrible goat in most of your minds.
