Certainly effects the likelihood of trading with the Sox on several fronts. Per Rotoworld:

According to ESPN's Buster Olney, the Red Sox have acquired closer Andrew Bailey from the A's.

Josh Reddick is headed to Oakland, possibly in a package of other prospects. Bailey, 27, has a 2.07 career ERA and 9.0 career K/9 through three major league seasons. He's expected to serve as Boston's primary ninth-inning man in 2012, pushing the newly-acquired Mark Melancon into a setup role. Bailey is eligible for arbitration for the first time this winter and is under team control through 2014. More to come.

Edit: Total haul is: Josh Reddick, Miles Head (20 y/o, 3B, 70's porn star), and Raul Alcantera (19 y/o, Pitcher). Sox also got Ryan Sweeney.

Isn't it the consensus that the BoSox weren't an ideal trading partner anyway? It'll be interesting to see what kind of cascading effect this has on NYY/Toronto. I was hoping Theo could sell Marmol, but now tend to agree w/ those saying it's best to wait on a deadline trade, hoping he can have a solid 1st half, thus raising his perceived value

Wasn't really hoping to trade him to the Red Sox anyway.

I'd say this could very well push Toronto to make a play for Garza. Especially if the Sox follow this up with Kuroda/Saunders.

That return for Bailey doesn't bode well for getting good value in a Marmol trade.

Agreed. I'd be shocked if he was traded before July. Maybe some contender will get desperate at that point. Hopefully he starts the season well.

Raul Alcantara, a solid upside righty, and Miles Head, a decent hitting 1B are the other 2 guys heading to Oakland. Boston also gets Sweeney. I think Alcantara may have age issues? May be mistaking him for someone else. Either way, this looks like a good deal for the Red Sox. Too many closers out there. Price tag had to drop for anyone wanting to deal away one. I hope we keep Marmol and see what the landscape looks like in July. Because I think Bailey has more value than Marmol and I wouldn't have been happy with that package for Marmol even. Hell, not even close honestly.

How does Oakland's return compare to what the Cubs got for Marshall? Without looking up a comparison, I tend to prefer Reddick to Wood but not by much. From the little I've heard about the prospects Oakland got, however, I think I prefer the guys the Cubs received.

Thoughts?

I guess it depends on how much you like Alcantera. I tend to prefer what the Cubs received as well. Wood should be a decent back of the rotation starter who is under team control for 5 years. Torreyes is interesting, and if he can add 30 pounds over the next 4 years he could become very interesting.

I don't think Reddick is more than a 2nd division starter, probably not the kind of guy I'd want starting for the Cubs once they get good.

So where does Ryan Madson end up? Is it a crazy idea to offer him a 1 year deal, and make him the closer with the idea of trading him in July? It's risky, since if he gets hurt or is ineffective, the Cubs are paying $20M on closers with a crappy team. With the limitations on draft and IFA spending, it might be a way of "buying" prospects though. I'd only consider it if it is very clear the Cubs will be way under budget after targeting Soler, Cespedes, Chen, etc.

That's a great sign for the Marshall trade - Bailey should have commanded far more than Marshall, and yet it's debatable who got the better end of the deal.

While the packages may not be all that different, ours is a far better deal overall. We got a back of the rotation starter with mid rotation potential and 2 prospects for 1 year of Marshall they got a 24 year old oufielder who's sure to be a starter in Oakland and his bat could be of value in CF where he'd play in Oakland as opposed to a corner spot which he'd inhabit in Boston. Marshall may be a better pitcher than Bailey, Bailey is a closer and that tag does hold a lot of value over set up man, although Marshalls left handedness and the ability and desire to start adds vale to him. However, the main reason why we made out better than the A's is that we got our bounty for 1 year of Marhsall, where as Bailey is under control through 2014.

Additionally, the A's gave up an additional big league piece in Ryan Sweeney, one of someone elses former prospects acquired in one of Billy Beanes fleece job trades that never seem to make them any better these days, but he is still only 26 and maybe the change of scenery cliche can do him good.

As for the propspects, one of ours isn't so much a prospect as a big league spare part/4th outfielder, and being a righty, it's a spare part we can use if Jackson and DeJesus are both starters. Torryes reportedly has a very high upside, and I know about as much about the 2 guys the A's got as I would have about Torryes before we got him.
