It's ridiculous, but there are a lot of stupid fans out there. This is how I really think it plays out, obviously Cutler is going to be out the next few weeks, and if the team maintains a grasp on a wildcard spot, they will play it safe, but lets say the last game of the year, against Minny on January 1st requires a Bears win to secure a playoff birth. You think you are keeping Jay out of that game? Doubt it.

That's why I'm not panicking yet, we are in the catbird seat for a wildcard spot with an easy schedule and holding many tiebreakers.

This is just far out of my scope of reasoning that it blows my mind; it's like the "he's soft" talk. The guy has had the absolute [expletive] kicked out of him since he's come here and all he's ended up with is a relatively minor knee injury, a concussion and a broken thumb (all while playing with diabetes) and there are people who think he's fragile? If he was actually fragile he'd have been crippled or dead a while ago.

A headline on deadspin this morning is: "For Some Bizarre Reason, A Jay Cutler Injury Is Shocking News"

There will be a perception of Cutler as soft.

Really, the Bears are still in good shape barring this being on the outside end of the range of Jay's return (7-8 weeks).

3-3 against their remaining schedule should be a given, and even with Caleb Hanie running the show, 4-2 isn't unreasonable considering the way the Bears play defense and special teams.

Now, if they have to roll into Dallas or New Orleans without Jay on Wildcard Weekend, well...

I guess I'm looking at this from the perspective of a Bears fan, so yeah, I guess non-Bears fan aren't going to pay as much attention to them as I do, but I had no idea Cutler being easily injured was a "thing." They're acting like last year was his rookie season or something.

Cutler being durable was a thing, but then came the concussion, knee and now thumb. It will become a thing.

So dumb. "QUARTERBACK SACKED AN INSANE AMOUNT OF TIMES! UNRELATED: IS EASILY INJURED!"

To be fair, as far as I know that could be the motivation behind that particular headline. It shouldn't be surprsing that a QB with that line gets hurt. But we do know there is a predilection to hate Jay Cutler, both nationally and among many Chicago fans/media.

Welp, it's officially official, per Rotoworld:

The Bears confirmed Monday that Jay Cutler will need surgery on his fractured thumb.

The Bears will not give a timetable, only saying that they are hopeful Cutler can return before the end of the regular season. We wouldn't bet on it. Initial reports had Cutler out 6-8 weeks, making a Week 17 return a best-case scenario. He can be dropped in all fantasy formats as Caleb Hanie takes over for the foreseeable future.

If I had to guess, I think we sign Bulger. I doubt we're very comfortable with Enderle being the #2.

Problem is is that Bulger has enough of a history and rapport with Martz to stir up a mini QB controversy the moment he's signed.

We are not signing Bulger.

Just showed on ESPN that Cutler hurt it EARLY IN THE SECOND QUARTER. So, clearly he played over 1/2 a game with it, and made some pretty major throws. The deep ball to Knox. The fastball to Davis for the TD. The corner route to Bennett on the sidelines. This is a weird situation.

What play was it? That's so odd because everyone else is saying it was on the int return and it kinda looks like it if you watch the replay. We're they reporting as fact or just speculating on when it might have occurred?

If that is when he injured it, I definitely makes me wonder why he can't play. He made some really nice throws in the 2nd half, which was his better and more accurate half of throwing the ball. I'm sure adrenaline helped mask the pain, but shouldn't be enough to overcome that sort of injury.

I broke my foot in the first half of a soccer game and finished the game. Once the game was over, the real pain and swelling started.

So, I have a question around the Free Agency rules.

I've heard a number of places this morning that if Hanie shines these last few games that it could benefit the Bears not only on the field, but by getting "value" for him this offseason.

According to ESPN, Hanie is an unrestricted free agent at the conclusion of the season - is there a mechanism in place in the NFL FA rules that would allow the Bears to get something in return if Hanie were to go somewhere else, or are those that are talking about that simply speaking in error?

On his official Twitter account, Warner wrote: "I am bummed [for Cutler]. Been there [too] many times, and he was playing great [football]! Yes, I know and love offense. But, NO I am NOT unretiring!"

No shock there.

Someone has to be signed. Hanie should get a one week audition against the Raiders. Doesn't have to win necessarily, but needs to show enough that he CAN win games this year. If not, we need someone to be able to step in and give us a shot anyway. This season isn't over, by any stretch and we have to find a way to 3 or 4 more wins. Because other than the Packers, I don't think anyone has played as well as we have over the last 5 games. Personally, I don't see a better realistic option than Bulger myself. Favre ain't happening, neither is Kurt and Garrard has a bad back. Who else is out there?

This is his 4th year in the league, so under the new rules he's going to be unrestricted.

post what he says please

Nothing really new:

- Talked about keeping his spot warm.

- Praised Jay, blah blah blah

- Of note: He will not have surgery today, but very soon. Still expects him to return for playoffs, basically.

- While they are confident in Hanie, the plan is to pursue a veteran on the market.
