His kids are in college? I'd understand is his kids were in grade school, even if they were in high school.

College? Is that really gonna hold him back? They're legal adults at this point. Time to cut the cord, Mike.

How long has he been in baseball? My guess is the cord feels like it's been cut for a while. Getting to spend some more time with your kids, even in college, isn't a terrible thing.

And he may not like Boston, either as an org or a city, as well as Chicago. Watching what they just did to Tito may play a role in his decision.

I know that I've turned down some pretty good looking jobs in the past because the person I'd be working for was an...jerk.

Per Jon Heyman at SI...its Cubs or bust for Maddux.

mike maddux has withdrawn from consideration for red sox managers job. my impression is he may be favored for #cubs job

Please please please.

I don't know the comments about his family make it seem like he's hinting that he really isn't wanting to move. Guess is he stays put.

I wouldn't mine Martinez or Alomar Jr either, but I think Maddux would be a coup here. I think Maddux can help build a long term pitching program here that for the list part we know works.

If he really doesn't want to move he would cancel the Cubs interview, too.

Maddux issued a statement through the Rangers:

he says he feels Boston is to far away. Maybe Chicago would not be. he doesn't say much about the Cubs job. I guess we'll learn more tommorow.

That was my first thought. DFW is what, maybe a 2 hour flight from Chicago and Boston would be around 4 at least?

Boston is too far away and just ran out the guy that led them to two WS. Or I could go to Chicago and work for the guy that structured those WS and not have to play the yankees every year.

Muskat just tweeted Mike will interview with the Cubs on Wensday.

 Slap in the face to Boston. Maddux is becoming my favorite candidate.

Would anyone here be opposed to Greg Maddux as pitching coach? I always wanted to see him as PC of the Cubs.

Well with Mike, we are sort of getting a pitching coach in manager's clothing. Which is one reason he's my favorite on the list. I mean even if he's not the pitching coach if he notices something about one of our pitchers he will talk to whoever the pitching coach is and work to fix it. And he might notice something the PC doesn't, he's a really good PC.

It's not that anyone is opposed to Greg as the PC so much as the understanding that it's very unlikely he'd ever take an everyday role like that.

Yeah, that's been the general consensus for years with Mike Maddux, which is why I kind of want him here. And we all know Greg had the reputation to be the pitcher all the younger pitchers gravitated to to learn from and there's countless articles about just how brilliant Maddux's pitchers mind really is. I don't think anyone would worry too much about Greg Maddux not being able to be a successful pitching coach.

Plus Mike would be reunited with Rudy Jaramillo. Not too big of a deal, but still. He already has some familiarity with one of the Cubs coaches.

David Foster Wallace is dead, man. Too soon. Too soon

I was thinking I'd like to see the Maddux brothers as manager/pitching coach in kind of the same way the Coen brother work as a director/writer team. Though traditionally their titles are different, but there is obviously a huge overlap in knowledge, experience, and abilities because they've got incredible intelligence and understanding of their craft.

will the maddux bros also follow suit and approach their androgynous dreams through flirting with sex change operations?

That's actually one of the Wachowski Brothers of Matrix fame that you're referencing as transgendered and not the Coens, but I don't see why one of the Maddux bros shouldn't also venture down that road. Chicago's a progressive, tolerant place right? And if it meant a WS victory, the entire coaching staff could come to work in full Victorian ball gowns if it so tickled their fancy.

or will they team up in some sort of neo-industrial fantasy land where they eat mushrooms, smash bricks with their heads, and kick turtles into their enemies?
