Seriously, can anyone here defend Sandberg's motives in taking a cheap shot at Sosa in his Hall of Fame speech? Seriously? Was that the time or place for a comment like that? It's awful. Just admit it.

stop with the "he's white" [expletive]. and who gives a [expletive] about his cheating ex-wife, if anything, that doesnt mark him, it marks her as a slut. oh-btw-he divorced her for a reason.

Sandberg was a great player, and in vast majority of opinions, a really great guy. neither of those things indicate him as a great manager, obviously, but to try and use his off-the-field issues against him in the managerial arguments is [expletive] stupid.

the irrational "Trash Sandberg" [expletive] is stupid, invalid, and just makes you all look like complete morons.

You have a very strong emotional attachment to this man.

sure, in a Cubs-fan way I love the guy. That doesnt mean I dream of him being the Cubs manager, but to irrationally dump on him is rather emotional too, dont you think?

I dont give a [expletive]. its his HoF speech. when Sosa gets there, he can say what he wants

ohh wait, thats right, those jerky sports writers will never let him in. I know, LETS TRASH SANDBERG.

I don't know what an irrational dump is.

Perhaps he (and many others) saw Sosa for exactly what he was. A cheat, a me before the team player and a guy who was allegedly linked to steroids.

Maybe the forum was not proper but it was 100% accurate.

Really? You don't care what somebody says up there? You don't care if they dump on their former teammates?

Seems like this is a far better time and place to trash Sandberg than the time/place Sandberg chose to trash Sosa.

He was a great player so none of that matters according to your logic. We must look past all other shortcomings and character flaws because Sandberg was a great player and generally kept his nose clean.

The Sandberg HOF speech transcript:

http://www.cubsnet.com/node/526

It's a pretty nauseauting self-wank manifesto.

The part where he takes a shot at a current Cubs player just to make himself look better:

If this validates anything, it's that learning how to bunt and hit and run and turning two is more important than knowing where to find the little red light at the dug out camera.

The partwhere he throws a former teammate under the bus for faking injuries, but is so self-absorbed he doesn't realize he's not just telling a funny joke:

Shawon Dunston, who knew three weeks in advance if we were facing Nolan Ryan and always had a hamstring pull playing the day before.

Really? REALLY? Sosa was a cheat and was generally disliked by many of his teammates. The boombox incident tells you what his teammates really thought of him.

The repeated cuckolding incidents tells you what Sandberg's teammates really thought of him.

What I never liked about this Sandberg love was that he deserved the managerial job. Loved Sandberg as a player, but didn't think he was the best candidate last year (that said, the better candidate don't always work out), and I didn't think he would be the best candidate this year. I thought, with time, and with a willingness to become a major league coach, that he might make a good manager someday. A lot of the fandom blasted Hendry for not giving Sandberg the chance, but the reality was, Sandberg was pushed aggressively by Hendry and Co. up the ladder when many other qualified guys would have never worked their way up that fast. What we should be hoping for is a modern, smart manager. Despite the media's attempts to paint Sandberg as becoming more modern (was it Wittenmeyer that wrote about Sandberg's willingness to talk stats?), he was still more of an old-school guy, beloved by more old-school folks (Pat Gillick, the Cardinals). He may very well end up doing a great job for them, and I wish him the best, but I think this is the best move for the Cubs, to find a manager who's vision fits in line with our front office's.

saying "hitting and bunting is more important then finding the little red light on the camera" is VASTLY different then saying "Sandberg sucks because his wife was a slut". And its not like he's the only Cub who didnt like Sosa

Sandberg's a raging anus for his HOF speech, for never diving for balls and for being a narcissistic curmudgeon who thinks his poo smells like fresh-cut Wrigley grass compared to the kids these days who spend more time standing on lawns than they do working on fundamentals.

He's not a raging anus because of his slutty ex-wife, but that's what makes his slutty ex-wife hilarious.

during his speech, there were a lot of chuckles at that point. I'm pretty sure that part (along with the Mark Grace bit) were comic relief. but your both right. His wife was a slut, so [expletive] him. literally.
