I saw what he had to say and didn't have much of a problem with it. My sense is that Briggs is more or less falling on his sword for the sake of some underpaid teammates. I think his request for an extension is more about presssuring management to get Forte done along with a couple others. He's comfortable so he really has nothing to lose. And other than his request for his own extension, he's not saying anything crazy.

I just think it's crazy that he's saying that the contract situations are affecting play on the field. Forte is having as good a season as he's ever had. Briggs's play hasn't been a problem (though maybe not spectacular)...I guess maybe you could somehow argue that Chris Harris maybe is distracted, but I'm not sure I buy that. Seems like something made up so Briggs can talk about contracts to the media.

Well, there's no way the contract talks aren't a distraction for Forte. The guy could go down tomorrow with a career ending injury and never sign the sort of life altering contract that he's bound to get. Forte also said something silly when he questioned why the Bears would pay him the $8m he'd get from a franchise tag when they won't give him a deal that averages $8m (because they think you only have a couple years left Matt). But being a distraction doesn't mean you play worse. And really, all he's saying is "hey fans you know what, if we lose you should blame management for not paying guys and causing distractions." He's putting pressure on management.

I don't think he's saying it's affecting the play on the field. More that it's affecting the motivation to get on the field.

fun facts

no T has given up more pressures than Jeremy Trueblood and only David Diehl has surrendered more pressures than Davin Joseph, amongst all Gs

left side of the Bears DL should have a fun day in pass rush

Nice. Williams and Webb have actually been middle of the road. I really wanted Joseph on this team too. Dang.

One interesting thing I heard (from someone on the radio) was that the Bears have the most rushing yards of any team when running to the right side of their line. The Bucs on the other hand give up an astounding 8+ yards per carry when teams run at the left side of their line. Put those two together, and it could be a big day for Forte. Of course, now that I said that, the Bucs will probably shut the running game down.

yeah, espn nfc south blog posted that, but it doesn't make any sense at all

Tampa's allowing just 4.4 ypc on the whole (are opponents losing yards on all runs left?), and looking at PFF, the only teams to actually have any success running to the right on TB were Min (14/72) and SF (17/72), while every other team was held to under 3 ypc when running right against them

Bennett and McCoy are both reputed as fantastic run defenders too

It's when they run to the right side instead of the wrong side.

I don't know which of those stats is true, but it has been pretty clear that the Bears have dominated teams in the run game outside the tackles. Either from designed runs to the outside or from Forte making his 1 jump cut and getting outside the tackles. Both guards and Garza have been masterful at pulling. And Martz has done a good job designing plays that put the numbers in the Bears favor on offense.

Couple the fact that this game is at a neutral site with the fact that both of these teams seem to be very similar in talent, and this one is pretty much up in the air. I think whoever wins the turnover battle takes it.

I'll probably get stoned for saying this but I wouldn't mind taking a look at TO. He is supposedly 100% ready to go. He put up almost 1000 yards last year and can still crank out a monster game here and there. With the bye next week we could get him pretty well acclimated before the MNF game in Philly.

I doubt the Bears would ever do it because they see TO as a huge distraction, even though Lance Briggs is being a bigger distraction right now than TO would ever be should he join. Performance-wise, I don't see him doing worse than any of our current receivers.

I think if you get "stoned", it's mostly up to you. But you won't get anything to me. I would welcome TO. While, it's possible the knee injury took a lot away from him, it's doubtful given the shape TO keeps himself in. Even if he took a step back, he's better than Roy Williams.

i just read the dan pompei piece in the tribune. what a piece of garbage. he's on my gulag list.

Why read stupidity that you know is going to piss you off?

Seems like most of the local media made fun of him for it, so that's good.

Interesting game today. Tampa's a hard team to figure out. They don't do anything particularly well. Average running, passing, and stopping the run. But they also don't do anything particularly terrible, with pass rush and consequently pass coverage below average. The Bears statistically are in the 20s in both run and pass offense and defense. But they aren't as bad as those stats would indicate. The Bears have been able to run the ball at will the last 3 weeks to the tune of nearly 6.4 ypc for Forte in that time. Cutler has had back-to-back 100 QB rating games, and has two 300 yard passing games not included in those.
