The reason we're making a big deal out of it being a promotion is that Boston's owner flat out said that it is customary for there to be no compensation when a front office person goes to another team if there is a promotion involved.

I'd be happy to be proven wrong, but I don't think that is what Henry said.

What I recall Henry saying is that it is customary for the Red Sox to grant permission to interview with another team if there is a promotion involved.

Well actually, I know he said that. If he also said the bit about no compensation if there's a promotion, then I missed that. If you could link me to that quote I'd appreciate it.

Now I know you don't really mean that.

That's only because a trip to Australia would take away from the 70% of income he puts in savings.

The Red Sox taught me that making empty threats around here convinces some people to give in.

I can't believe Truffle's going to let all of Australia burn just because he wants the Cubs to trade Trey McNutt!! He'll be the laughingstock of the national weather service!

The Red Sox are going to let $6.5 million burn, and that's certainly worth more than the entirety of Australia.

Of course you're wrong. Epstein signed a contract with the Red Sox to be their GM. He can't turn around and sue them for asking him to honor that contract.

The Sox also have a contractual obligation to Epstein--he is their GM. If they tried to make him the "co-GM" or demote him to scout or even "promote" him to Special Assistant to the President in Charge of Pencil Sharpening (or whatever) THEN he would have a contractual beef (and win in any court).

The specific language of the contract may or may not permit the Red Sox to reassign Epstein. We don't know.

But clearly that's not the situation we're in. The Sox have made no effort to get out of their contractual obligation to Epstein, so I'm not sure where you're going with this.

Yeah, but what if McNutts a bust? Then all of those people and kangaroos died for nothing.

They've made no effort to reassign him because they're banking on him being the Cubs GM. It would be pretty dumb for crazyface Lucchino to put Epstein in charge of ticket sales in the middle of his dumbass negotiations.

He's still an asset that can be traded before he reaches the bigs... just shouldn't be for a GM.

If, in this hypothetical world, he ends up getting traded for a superstar...then those people and kangaroos died for something. JUST SAYING.

This seriously need to get done sooner than later. We need to have a GM as soon as the offseason begins, a good one at that. Here's my suggestion: let Luccino send us a list of 25 players. We cross off 10, and let them chose 2 of the remaining, and we'll send 1 more of our chosing off the same list.

I doubt that's going to work, considering the Cubs might not have more than 10 players in the organization that the Red Sox would want.

Castro

Garza

Soto

Marshall

Anyone else from the ML roster?

Then a handful of intriguing prospects:

Jackson

McNutt

Sczrzr

That's 7. Pick your favorite next three (not including 2011 draftees), and the cupboard is pretty bare after that.

Here is an interesting article on who the Cubs should resist sending to Bos at all costs!! http://m.bleacherreport.com/articles/895713-theo-epstein-compensation-10-cubs-prospects-chicago-should-refuse-to-send?embedded=true

You can only think of 3 prospects another team might want? The pessimistic whining of some fans makes me want to stab kittens.

Sure in a vacuum, there are other guys that another team would want.

But as compensation for Epstein, it sure feels like the Sox are shooting higher than the mid-tier stuff that's left.

Just for grins though, who are your #s 8 9 and 10 that are also offlimits?

Then who are 11 and 12 that the Sox get to have?

Go through that exercise, and I think you'll see what I'm saying.

How about we give them any 2 outside the top 10 and a pony.

I can think of plenty. Jay Jackson, Lake, Rusin, Flaherty, LeMahieu, Antigua, Golden, Beliveau, Dolis, Watkins, Struck, Beeler, Gonzalez, Wells, Hernandez, Vitters, Silva, Whitenack, Ha, Searle, Rhee, Rhoderick off the top of my head.

Sure, most of them may not be major league ready, but the Red Sox have enough at the big league level that they can stand to take on a few low level guys. They're essentially getting free prospects here as Epstein is probably leaving regardless and has already been replaced. It's just gravy. Again, I really don't think that we should have to, but if that's what it takes in the end. In reality, they should be getting guys like Ridling, Coleman, Gaub, Bour, and Lalli at best.

I hate anyone that ever had a pony when they were growing up.

more genocide than murder as we're likely eliminating almost an entire species here.

There are certainly more than 10 guys in the Cubs organization (majors and minors) who I'm not ok with giving up for Theo. My list probably differs wildly from WSR's (Take Rafael Dolis, please), but to say there aren't 10 guys that are property of the Cubs that you'd have issues giving up(when not necessary) is kangaroo-stab-worthy

I was hoping somebody would've picked up and ran with the Seinfeld reference by now, but since they haven't....
