I loved how Theo acknowledged what we did with our 2011 draft and how, even back in the Red Sox war room, our draft raised some eyebrows (in a good way).

Yes, this. That was very very cool to hear. I believe his words were along the lines of "We saw it and said 'Wow, they're really going for it this year'" or something to that effect.

Also said something like, "It looks like they finally 'get it.'"

Here's some other quotes he said after the conference

“I’m not going to comment on anybody in particular,’’ Epstein told a group of reporters after the formal news conference broke up. “The impact free agents, the long-term commitments, there’s a time and a place for those type of commitments. But you have to understand the time and place. It’s also important you understand the player."

“Baseball players have a prime age, an age starting at 26, 27, usually until about 31, 32," Epstein said. “You get the best production, the best bang for your buck with players (in that prime). Of course, the club we have will have a diversified roster. ... Ideally, you’ll have most of your players in their prime, hopefully homegrown.’’

I'm trying to decide what this means for the prospects of a Fielder or Pujols signing. Probably no to Pujols because of the age comment, but Fielder seems to fit right in what he wants.

I'm thought he was kidding. At the time, I wasn't. But when he posted on here, he said that he was wearing a purple Fanta shirt. When he went on air with Waddle and Silvy, he also mentioned that it was a Fanta shirt. I'm pretty sure (but I could be wrong) that in the original report, he didn't say anything about it being a Fanta shirt (just purple).

I kinda assumed he was revealing it jokingly. Regardless, real or not, I think his name should be highlighted in purple to signify its superior nature to everyone else's

Am I the only one who didn't overlook GR's vague unveiling of who purple shirt guy he actually was on here?

huh

EDIT - oh.

I didn't see it.

A lot of people didn't, things were moving a mile a minute back then, lol

If you want to keep believing in the magic, don't look at the link in the spoiler...

Yeah, that was a joke.

I think it was "wow they really get it", basically that the Cubs now understood how this draft thing is supposed to work.

I can't remember if I said this or not, but since we drafted sort of a super high upside toolsy guy 1st last year, I'm excited that he's going to get this type of instruction right off the bat.

I'm even more excited to watch Baez's development now.

He's superior because he happened to see and recognize Theo at a Starbucks and then email Sullivan about it?

I will say that as dubious as I was towards that story, it was welcome news at a time where nothing was really coming out. IIRC, at the time we didn't even know if the Red Sox had agreed to let Theo interview for the position.

One last comment on Starbucksgate, if the whole process was supposed to be hush hush, why the hell didn't Theo make his wife or someone else (Randy Bush needs something to do) get the coffee for him? Doesn't seem like a good idea to walk around in a popular gathering spot in the middle of a weekend day less than a mile from Wrigley.

Apparently, Hoyer and McLeod have already been in town for a few days.

CHICAGO -- San Diego Padres general manager Jed Hoyer and assistant GM Jason McLeod have been in Chicago the past three days and are expected to be added to the staff of new Chicago Cubs president of baseball operations Theo Epstein no later than Monday, a source close to the situation said.

Nothing else really new in there.

I love that Theo gave purple Fanta shirt guy his due.

What was his exact quite on that?

"When I'm somewhere where I don't want to be recognized and somebody recognizes me, I have a couple standard lines I go to," Epstein said. "I usually always say like, 'Oh no, that's not me, but I guess I kind of look like him. I get that a lot.' Or I say, 'Theo Epstein? Who's that?'

"And I was so excited to be in Chicago and so surprised to be recognized that I dropped both lines on this guy without stopping to realize they don't really work well in concert with each other. My mistake, and actually, I'm a little bit more of a Dunkin' [Donuts] guy to begin with. Now that I know Dunkin' supports the Cubs, that's a good thing."

I'm not even sure if I fathom how this board will operate with leadership that the primary contingent on this board loves/is aligned with.

It's going to be very weird and different.

Already it's weird debating if our front office is the best in baseball or just top 5, vs. arguing whether Hendry is middle of the pack or terrible.

It's going to be very weird and different.

We'll grow to become arrogant, self-assured that our management can do no wrong, so anything that goes wrong will be completely on the players and other non-management factors, like other teams' luck.

In other words, we'll become SoSH.

Apparently, Theo made all the people who went to lunch with him yesterday sing their college fight songs.

That's sort of what I was thinking.

And if we experience similar success, Cubs fans are going to become Red Sox fans in general.

And when he leaves for the Nationals we'll demand Strasburg and Harper as fair compensation
