These are facts:

Theo and his hires are NO guarantee to break your baseball miseries.

Nobody, I mean NOBODY on this website knows what a Prospect is?

---not any geek trying to be a Sabermetrician

---not any troll in Momma's basement

---not any poster who has daily schitzoids about minor league boxscores

In the US MLB Draft annually, there are approx 20,000 draft eligible college players

from all college levels, and so many more from the high school ranks. On average, 1500

players from this pool get drafted because they are the best of the crop. Add in FA

International signings and the talent pool is vast.

First thing some of you EXPERTS need to do is relax. RELAX

Hearing that players in the minors don't walk enough is irritating, to say the least.

RELAX

Have you ever played at a high level? Probably NOT, so relax.

You have no idea what the Cubs are asking each prospect, from Round 1 to Round 50 what they want from that certain player. All you look at is a daily boxscore, and then comment, Oh, the Cubs hitting philosophy is bad with a bunch of free swingers?

RELAX.

ALL these kids are super-talented, or they wouldn't be given the chance to chase a dream.

THEO and his gang are no sure thing. Most "suits" in the game love baseball, but were never blessed to have the skills, and baaaallllls to play it.

Never diss a kid chasing a dream who has the nuggets to step into a box and face a 95 mph projectile that could do damage while you are in Momma's basement being the LUMPY CRITIC, and DO NOT LABEL ANY PLAYER as a non-prospect as you are only proving me right every time you open your trap!!

I'm actually surprised that nobody has since petitoned to change their screen name or subnic to LUMPY CRITIC.

Wouldn't be worth the effort at this point.

At SoSH, they are talking about whether Theo is really getting a promotion and one guy says "Would it be different if Luccino and Henry were brothers? Theo reporting to LL and JH is no different than Theo reporting to all members of the Ricketts family"
Posted
Bud Selig wasn't too thrilled that the Red Sox and Cubs messed around for 10 days during the playoffs without reaching a compensation deal on Theo Epstein. Both teams look ridiculous in the eyes of people around the game for dithering so long over what should have been a simple transaction.

I'm curious what exactly it would take for SOSH to give up the "it isn't a promotion" angle.

Yeah, what jerks we are for not giving up Castro.

Selig and MLB are idiots because they got 2 weeks of added media attention in a couple of markets that would have ignored baseball this month.

I choose to believe it exists due to an NSBB lurker.

What's a Cubs sweep?

This is like 10 days old, but I hadn't seen it here. TangoTiger uses salary comparisons to players to try to figure out appropriate compensation for Theo.

http://www.insidethebook.com/ee/index.php/site/comments/proper_compensation_for_epstein/

While I agree with his conclusion, I'm not buying that a player/GM salary comparison holds a lot of weight.

I don't know if I agree with that. The guys he mentioned are a step above role players. Epstein is a guy who should be able to change the face of a franchise for years to come. I know that he only had a year left with the Red Sox, and the relationship had expired, but it's all about supply and demand. Say you have a car you plan on junking. All of the sudden, some guy comes to you and says hey, I really want your car, how much? Unless it's a close friend, chances are you're going to try to get as much for it as possible, but hopefully not getting too greedy. It's reasonable to ask for a few thousand for it, assuming it's still in good shape, but if you ask for $10,000, then that's just greedy.

What if your car told you he didn't want you to drive it anymore, and the perspective owner already filled out the paperwork to move the title into that new person's name, which is perfectly acceptable because you gave them permission to talk to the car.

The bottom line is that Theo was under contract with The Red Sox for another year, and whether or not he would be let out of it was up to Henry. I'm not saying that he should be doing it the way he is, but he has the right to do so. To be honest, I think he's doing it more to spite Theo than The Cubs. They shouldn't be doing what they're doing, but they have the right to, so they're trying to juice us for whatever they can get. I'm sure they planned it this way from the moment they granted Ricketts permission to talk to him. It's capitalism.

If you read down the comments section in Tango's article, he later realizes that Theo would be owed $7 mil (had he stayed) by the Red Sox for 2012. At that point he says no compensation should be necessary and the Sox should thank the Cubs for taking him off their hands.

Incoming president of Baseball Operations Theo Epstein arrived at Wrigley Field Monday morning to meet some of the Cubs' employees and check out his new digs.

The Ricketts' family was there to greet Epstein in anticipation of his introductory press conference at 11 a.m. on Tuesday in the United Club at Wrigley.

Bud says get it done or else:

http://www.csnne.com/blog/redsox-talk/post/Selig-to-intervene-SoxCubs-negotiations-?blockID=581840&feedID=3352

After 10 days of back-and-forth proposals failed to produce a settlement on the matter of compensation, Epstein resigned as executive vice-president and general manager of the Red Sox Friday night and was named president of Baseball Operations for the Cubs.

The idea was that Epstein and Red Sox assistant GM Ben Cherington would continue to work on the compensation issue, but no further talks are scheduled until after Epstein is introduced Tuesday at Wrigley Field and Cherington is named his successor at Fenway.

If Epstein and Cherington can't settle the issue before Nov. 1, commissioner Bud Selig said Sunday night he would intervene.

"They have until Nov. 1 -- Theo and Ben and all the other parties involved," said Selig prior to the start of Game 4 of the World Series. "Hopefully they can get things done. I always encourage clubs to try to get things done between themselves. Somehow, the commissioner has enough things of controversy [to deal with].

"They'll either get it done or they won't. If they don't, then I will."

I hope he doesn't look at Hendry's old office and fly back to Boston :-$

I wonder how Bud would go about choosing fair compensation in terms of players. How much knowledge can he really have about the Cubs minor league system. I wouldn't be shocked if it's him making the call that it comes down to cash. Which would be [expletive] incredible btw.
