It sounds like Henry may be an alcoholic. He threw back a morning cocktail, and decided to send an email out to the Globe.

I'm not sure how the sox can make Theo sit out a year. He's their GM. They can't just sit him on the bench like a grumpy slugger.

I also can't imagine him going back to work there either. That's why I think it will happen. It will take as much time as Henry can drag out of Ricketts. It's a huge PR mess for them. Dragging this thing out is about the only face saving gesture they can do at this point. After it's over they will sling mud on Ricketts and Theo and hope the masses buy it all.

I mean legally they can't keep him under contract and prevent him from fulfilling his duties. I assume his contract gives him pretty broad baseball decision authority that they'd need someone to use. They can't just usurp that without letting him go one way or another.

Kaplan now saying this is nothing more than last minute postering by the Red Sox and that the deal will get done.

The Red Sox figure they can out wait the Cubs on this one.

Which is an increasingly insane viewpoint. The only thing that the Red Sox could hope to pin the Cubs on was that they HAD to have Epstein as the GM, and they'd need him to start making decisions soon. With the news that Epstein would be president and Hoyer is the GM target, there is little urgency in adding a President of Baseball Ops immediately. Or at the very least they can wait a lot longer than the Sox would want to before their sending Theo 6.5 million dollars and the entire organization isn't sure if Theo is actually running things during actual offseason decisions. Levine was dead on, what children.

At some point, it was brought up by someone that Epstein didn't include a lawyer and negotiated his own contract with the Red Sox, so maybe that language isn't in there. Or maybe it is. Who knows.

This is the kind of thing that would be reported on if we had remotely competent sports journalists in either town.

John Henry will chain Theo's ankle to his office chair and stand behind him menacingly with a whip.

Why is nobody entertaining the fact that maybe the reason that they keep denying a deal being done to any media members who come calling is because they were specifically told by Selig NOT to make the announcement until a set time? Just saying.

Well, he did go to Law School and got his J.D.

He negotiated his contract with a psychopath without a lawyer? WTF Theo? You're brilliant or insane.

I wasn't thinking about it that way, but I would guess Henry and Theo would have to make some sort of an agreement about his duties or buy him out with a clause that says he can't work in MLB for some period to time. He's already told them he's done after the year so it's hard to see how he could be thinking about the big picture.

Anyway, it's over for Theo and the Red Sox. He isn't coming back to work for them.

So he passed the bar *and* he knows a little bit?

Besides, with a bunch of God foresaken small market teams starting to come into power and potential World Series matchups that nobody outside of their markets care about, both The Cubs and Reds Sox are two teams that it is in MLBs best interest to both be very good. If this is something that will help both teams, it's what Selig and Co. want. It will happen.

I figured that Cherington and Henry were just blowing smoke to try to defuse things until a PC tomorrow, but that last article is a bit more harsh with the whole "fundamental divide" bit.

I've been saying that all day on Twitter.

Someone compared this to a divorce earlier, and it certainly seems like the negotiating style is spiteful. Hope it doesn't come to a 2012 scenario.

What I've read is that Hoyer wouldn't make the jump until Theo is on board, but I assume the timing could be moved up if necessary.

This could be right on the money. Selig has said he does not want major annoucements to interfere with the post season/World series. Think about this: Why in the world would all these "excellent sources" tell all the media outlets that the deal is basically done and that a presser is scheduled for tomorrow if they did not have the goods on it?

There's a ton of credibility to be lost if you come out and say it's done only to have it to not be the case. There's been too many reports with regards to compensation, etc. for this to be just smoke.

Yup. So they definitely won't be illegally searching his [expletive].

I hate when the parents use the kids as leverage in these situations. Poor little Theo is going to end up so scarred. Surely he'll turn to the drugs and rock and roll music.
