Looks like Wittenmeyer asked him a few questions about the Cubs.

Because of the relatively thin market for starting pitchers, some analysts project Wilson as a $100  million free agent even before taking into account what he might do the rest of this month. Whether the cost-conscious Cubs ownership — already stung by the back ends of bad contracts — would have an appetite for a contract like that, the Cubs’ payroll promises plenty of flexibility for such a move, with up to $50 million coming off the books.

The Cubs also have a desperate need for starting pitching, and the next GM could be looking for a signature, impact move.

Of particular appeal with Wilson is the relative low mileage on his arm — just 708 regular-season innings for a guy who didn’t become a full-time starter until last year.

What about visualizing wearing a Cubs uniform at Wrigley?

‘‘I’ve never even been there,’’ the Southern California native said.

When the time comes, the gun enthusiast and part-time car racer said he’ll evaluate the Cubs according to several criteria.

‘‘Gun laws, day games, weather, competitiveness, freedom to be myself,’’ he said with a straight face.

That’s, what, at least three strikes against the Cubs?

‘‘I’m just saying, that’s how I decide,’’’ Wilson said. ‘‘That’s the way my brain works.’’

When told the Cubs still have to hire a GM before they’ll be talking to him, he perked up.

‘‘I could be the GM,’’ he said. ‘‘I won my fantasy league three years in a row when I was in the minors.’’

Welp... without even being sure what he means by day games, we're at least screwed by the gun laws, the weather, and the competitiveness.

The fact that a guy like CJ Wilson is going to get over $100MM really makes me sad at the fact that the Cubs had such great, young, cheaper starting pitching in the 2003 range and basically accomplished nothing out of it. Let's hope we can develop some top line starters sometime in the next decade or else our hopes will lie in signing guys like Wilson to these ridiculous contracts and, most of the time, watching them flame out and not pay off their investment (like Mike Hampton, Barry Zito, Denny Neagle, the Zambrano extension, John Lackey, etc...).

Gun laws? Seriously?

To apply for a gun permit, applicants must be 21 years old or older (or 18, with parents' permission), have a valid FOID card and an affidavit signed by a state-certified firearms instructor, among other requirements. The permit fee is $100, the permit itself expires in three years and the application must be submitted in person at police headquarters, 3510 S. Michigan Ave., though applicants were advised not to bring their weapons with them.

Key provisions of the ordinance include:

Firearm sales will be banned in the city.

Gun training totaling four hours in a classroom and an hour on a firing range will be required before getting a permit. But firing ranges are banned, so training must be completed outside Chicago.

To transport a gun, it will have to be "broken down," not immediately accessible, unloaded, and in a firearm case.

Firearms may be possessed only inside the dwelling. It will be illegal to have a gun in the garage, on porches or in the yard. Guns also will not be allowed in hotels, dorms and group-living facilities.

Permit-bearing owners also must individually register each gun they own within five days of purchase and are allowed to register only one handgun per 30-day period, Weis said. The registration fee is $15.

Yeah he ain't coming here. The Cubs would be option #30 if that was his most important criteria

He could always live in the suburbs.

Between this and Pujols' man-love for Glenn Beck, a Cubs team with guys like this would really be testing my "anyone can play for the Cubs so long as they win" theory.

How amusing that fans of many teams are going to spend countless hours and bandwidth discussing how their team needs to sign Wilson, all the while being completely oblivious to the fact that their local gun laws, of all things, rule them out.

As far as I'm concerned, Pujols can tout Glenn Beck for President of the universe, if it means the Cubs win the WS.

As for the gun laws, can't he just drive up to Wisconsin and shoot all the guns he wants?

You might just want to avoid hearing the opinions of like 99% of athletes.

That goes without saying. The Glenn Beck thing is a bit much, though. That's an extra special level of dumb.

Googling for the Sun-Times article, I found out that CJ Wilson is, oddly enough, apparently liberal and voted Obama in '08.

Is it surprising to find out he's liberal because he likes guns?

He also doesn't drink, smoke, or do drugs...one of those straightedgers. Also, he's a really good pitcher who compiles K's, doesn't give up HRs, and does it all throwing left handed.

i don't believe you did, i'm pretty sure that he was just speaking for himself but didn't have the courage to actually say so...either way i don't live for the approval of others. some slight by an anonymous person with a narrow mind really just doesn't matter.

My beef is with the idea of a millionaire athlete turning down becoming even more of a millionaire primarily because of a state or city's gun laws (if he's actually serious). If the guy wants to own guns, hey, great, go right ahead.
