i still think the OT should be extended if your team gets a power play with less than 2 minutes remaining

Yea doesn't really prevent cheap play in the last 15-30 secs.

I actually don't have too big of a problem with shootouts. It's a long damn season and at least it cuts down on minutes and injury risk that a multiple/longer OT format would bring. Plus, if the game of tiddly winks attracts some casual fans, that's great for the sport.

This Patrick Kane guy, the Hawks might have something with him. Good 2 points tonight. Hiller is a borderline elite goalie who stoned us on multiple breakaways.

Like I said, the team serving the penalty should get one fewer shootout chance. That would curb the late cheap shots.

Ooo, that's a good idea.

I do really like that idea, but I think it should be limited to only penalties taken in the last minute of OT and/or only certain types of penalties. Otherwise, I think we'd see a lot more passive play the last 2 minutes of OT as no one wants to risk a crosscheck or interference penalty or even a delay of game penalty to significantly ruins their team's chances of getting the extra point.

Anything that takes away from the teams trying to settle a game without a shootout should be limited.

I'd do it with any penalty in the last 45 seconds. With a minute there is still plenty of time for a power play to get the job done.

I wish they'd make OT 10 minutes before a shootout. I feel like five minutes is a very limited time to get anything going.

Over the course of an 82 game season season I'm glad they limit the OT time. No reason to make these guys play that much harder for 5 more minutes a night.

yeah, 10 minutes seems much too long.

5 seems too short and 10 would be too long. What about 7 minutes? That might involve play from an extra line and lead to a settlement. I dislike shootouts in any sport.

I prefer the tie.

But I understand that is not the popular opinion

Just because of tradition? Or hate shootouts that much? Going back to the tie wouldn't be a horrible option but obviously its less appealing to the casual fan the NHL wants so hard to entice.

The problem is the NHL needs to entice that casual fan. Coupling that need with the desire for limiting player safety and minutes, I think the current format is the best compromise possible.

Getting back to this years Hawks, can we possibly start a petition to get #2-#7 back on the same defensive unit? That pairing was widely considered a top 3 unit in the NHL two years ago and Duncan won some trophy of some significance if I remember correctly.

Keith and Leddy play, or want to play, similar games and both are going to be susceptible to teams with bigger forwards who want to dump and chase and hit behind the goal line. If you just look at the type of games each of our D-men play, I can't come up with a compelling reason it shouldn't be Keith/Seabs, Leddy/Hammer, Mont/OD/Lep

Q is using 4-7 as a match-up shutdown line with Frolik-Bolland-Bickell against other #1 lines, and he's using 2-8 as an offensive punch pairing -- usually with Carcillo-Kane-Hossa to give that line additional pop. 5-6 rotates with the 4-7 and 2-8 pairs with the Brunette-Toews-Sharp line and Stalberg-Kruger-Mayers line (and sometimes with Carcillo-Kane-Hossa). 4-7 and 2-8 are getting about the same time on ice, with 5-6 getting a few minutes less per game.

While all you said is true, is it worth the diminished play of Duncan Keith? He clearly feels he needs to be more responsible in the defensive end to help cover up for Leddy's shortcomings at this point. He was a top 3 all around defensemen in the league two years ago.. Last year he was average at best and while off to a slightly better start this season, still a shade of himself two years ago.

I dislike like them, but the NHL at least does it right with shootouts just in regular season and unlimited OT in playoffs.
