Strong outing for JY Kim: 5 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 5 K. He's now thrown 8.1 scoreless innings at Mesa.

It looks like Kim, just like Kyung-Min Na, is taking to Mesa after struggling at higher levels (KM Na is posting a 1.000 OPS at Mesa). Both are still 19 so not a big concern for them being down at Mesa.

The big 3 at the top of Mesa's line up:

Na: 1/4

Amaya: 1/3, 2B

Hernandez: 1/3

I was thinking that too. Must be a tough adjustment for Asian players. Or maybe they just don't like Boise.

I don't think you can fit all Asian amateurs in that description: Dae-Eun Rhee was fantastic before needing TJS in his pro debut at Peoria and Hak-Ju Lee was very impressive in his Boise pro debut.

Thoughts on Chris Rusin? Any chance he sees some big league action next year?

Chance? Sure. Role? Unknown. He is what he is, a polished lefty that throws strikes. He'll be in Iowa, and he's more than a JR Mathes type, so there's a chance he sees the bigs, particularly if the rotation slots line up. Pen lefty situation looks solid enough that I doubt he'd get called up for pen duty unless they wanted a long man type.

Rusin sure is cleaning up tonight: 6 IP, 6 H, 0 R, 8/0 K/BB

Jackson is 1 for 3 with a K as the DH.

Abreu is 3 for 4 with a 3B and K, bringing his Daytona line to .343/.400/.594

Jackson adds a double in a big inning for Iowa. Flaherty doubled as well.

How much longer for BJax in Iowa? Unfortunately, I'm afraid we might not see him until Sept 1st.

11 K's for Rusin thru 7 IP..very impressive, and he wont be 25 for a couple more months.

There's no need to start his service clock early just to get him an extra 2 weeks in Chicago this year, especially so soon after his promotion to Iowa.

More of a Ted Lilly type ceiling kind of guy?

man where the hell did this outing come from for rusin?

anyway, i am all for piling up a few low-ceiling back-of-the-rotation options in the upper minors (struck, rusin, beeler, raley, coleman) and then seeing who can stick in the bigs.

Struck/Beeler don't fit into that bunch. Sure, they could be back of the rotation options when all is said and done, but their ceiling is more mid-rotation as they ahve better quality stuff than Rusin/Raley/Coleman.

Probably a bit too optimistic. Lilly, at his peak, was roughly a guy who was around 90. Rusin's peak velo is probably 90, and he sits more mid-upper 80's.

I can't really think of a recent Cub I would compare Rusin to. Maybe the Sean Marshall of the last few years, prior to picking up velo in 2010. He's not as good as Marshall, but prior to the velo bump, Marshall was a guy who sat mid-upper 80's, with a solid array of secondary pitches. Marshall had better stuff, Rusin had a bit better control.

That isn't the greatest comp, though, due to the huge difference in frames. If you wanted to argue that he was a better JR Mathes, that's possible. Rusin is what he is, a guy who doesn't have a great pitch, but can throw 3-4 pitches for strikes.

Lilly is a good match for style, but he's a bit of an outlier to begin with. The big thing about comparing him to Lilly or Marshall is both those guys had very good curves. Rusin has better control than either, and it's a good thing since he has a slimmer margin for error with his stuff being unable to compare with two others who are more exception to the rule.

Lost amidst this discussion on Rusin is that Alberto Cabrera came through with a good outing. He still shows a very good slider at times, and his fastball/slider combination should play well out of the pen. If the velocity inches back up to the mid-90's out of the pen, he's a guy who could very well slot into a late inning situation if the opportunity is presented.

Man, I don't like the JR Mathes comp but I really can't think of a good comp for Rusin.

Great outings from Rusin and Antigua.

I was under the impression Rusin was a pretty heavy groundball pitcher, which would make him a bit more intriguing for me than otherwise. I could be mistaken on that one though.

Anybody feel a Paul Maholm comp is off the mark?

Was Abreu anything special at any point? There must be some reason they chose him in the Kosuke trade.

I'm not getting the Mathes comp at all. JR Mathes was Kirk Reuter. Rusin actually strikes people out and isn't as hittable as I am. Edited by SouthSideRyan

2.11 GO-AO this season. 2.47 last year.
