Discussion question of the day: What do we make of Marwin Gonzalez?

He's 22 and has mostly split time between 2B and SS with Tennessee and Iowa this season, with a smattering of CF in AA. In 216 ABs with Tennessee, he hit .301/.359/.421 with a 27/17 K/BB, 2 HRs, and a .335 BABIP. In 67 ABs with Iowa, he's hit .358/.392/.537 with a 5/5 K/BB, 1 HR, and a .367 BABIP. I haven't seen a whole lot in the way of his defensive reviews, but he's only had 11 errors between AA and AAA, so it seems as if he has handled himself well enough in the field.

Most of his success appears to be batting-average driven, but he's kept his Ks down and seems to draw enough walks to keep the "hacker" label at bay. Compared to previous seasons, it seems as if he has improved his batting average, walks, and power. A September callup is not out of the question if he continues hitting like he has been.

Is he a flash in the pan? Should he be in the conversation for the Cubs' Top 10?

I would definitely think he is in line for a September call up and if he has a good fall/spring I think he could be in line to win a utility role with the team for next season. Especially if he can handle 2B/SS/OF adequately and one or more of Baker/Dewitt/Johnson do not return.

I think, sooner rather than later, we need to figure out the 2B/3B situation with our prospects, because we've got too many guys for those positions, and a lot of them are going to start losing their trade value quickly. Obviously shortstop is not going to be an issue for a while, and I think we all agree that we're hoping to get an elite first baseman.

However, with Gonzalez's emergence (if it's for real), we now have him, Vitters, Watkins, Flaherty, Lemahieu, even Barney to an extent fighting for 2 spots. (I suppose Vitters can still be in the 1st base discussion, but he'd need to significantly improve his offense to be valuable there). That's 5 or 6 guys, and I just realized I left Lake out as well. None of these guys are really "young" anymore, and it seems redundant to have so many. Yes, it's nice to be able to fill out the utility positions in house, but I think the ceiling for all of these players is a starter at one of those positions. I'd start calling around, seeing what the value is for these players, and maybe unload a couple of them for pitching prospects, or package them with a Soriano/Fukudome/Dempster to help with salary relief.

I can tell you from what I saw of Marwin Gonzalez that he is a slick fielding player at ss. I have not seen him play any other position, but he can sure play ss. His bat has finally caught up with his glove this season. He is young enough to be a real good player, as it always depended on the bat. His new stance has really helped him, hope it continues.

I think Marwin is having a very nice breakthrough season, but I'm hardpressed to ponder him for the top 10. His defense is decent-solid at short, but by most accounts, not really elite. Still seems a better fit for a utility label. Power is very debatable.

I like him a lot, and have always hoped that he would breakthrough as the kid has tools, but it's hard for me to buy top 10, even in our system, even pre-draft signees, right now. If someone believed that he would stick at short, then I could buy top 20, but top 10? Not sure how I can get that to fit for my own perspectives, but to each their own.

Not a great game from Nick Struck, but a very solid start so far. Good to see him holding his own. I imagine that he might get some time in AFL to work on his secondary pitches, but not sure.

Isn't it time some Tennessee relievers got promoted? Iowa (and Chicago) could certainly use some pitching help.

They've already shuffled the staffs a fair amount in AA/AAA. Rhoderick's made a beeline up, but he probably needs more time, and I'm not sure Dolis is all that deserving of a promotion yet. Beliveau, perhaps, but Maine and Gaub are solid AAA lefties. Parker/Carpenter probably aren't going to be demoted yet, Berg's performing well.

As far as the lefties go, the answer is simple. Make Grabow go away, call up Gaub or Maine and send Beliveau to AAA. Maybe even leapfrog Beliveau straight to Chicago. And Im not sure why you brought up the possibility of demoting Carpenter. He never should have been sent back down to begin with.

Another walk for the Dong-Yub Kim and he's got the OBP over .300!
