The Phillies/Gillick/Amaro won a World Series with a modest payroll. The payroll ballooned once they had to retain and keep all those players that won the World Series. Frankly, they deserved it. If any GM/front office is an automatic idiot based off of one bad contract, we'll have to include Beane in that group for the Chavez contract.

The Gillick think seems to actually be sounding like it could be a possibility.

I know he wouldn't want to publicly say anything different no matter how he feels, but this quote is still kind of scary in case he does get consideration for the job as President of the team:

Gillick speaks highly of Hendry, who replaced Andy MacPhail as the Cubs' GM after 2002.

"He is doing a good job," Gillick said. "They've had a lot of injuries this year.''

I'm right with you...this is looking like a real possibility, and if it happens, I think Hendry stays, along with the rest of his crew. Gillick is old school.....don't think he'd bring in someone like Rick Hahn, as one article has suggested. In fact, after the Phillies won the series with Gillick at the helm, they practically bragged at their non-use of statistical analysis.

I find it really hard to believe that Ricketts thinks that Hendry just needs a baseball helper to put him over the top. I have to think that if Gillick or someone like him is brought on, that it's to pick a new GM and set the tone for organizational philosophy.

I think Gillick gets brought on to be a figurehead amongst the consultants, as well as a valued consultant. He's old school and I think the Phillies are a pretty sweet team to look to imitate.

I also believe he'd keep Hendry if his job title gave him that power. Gillick's an old school guy like Hendry and I think both might think the Cubs can turn it around quickly. I think that even might play a factor into why he's willing to take a non-GM or maybe higher role.

You seem happy about any or all of these things. Correct me if I'm wrong.

If talent is added to the FO I would not mind Hendry remaining. This year and last year sucked, but were necessary in the end and I think were fine moving forward given they don't blow their wad on another Soriano-esque player (high K, bad D, no BB, no elite tool). I blame Soriano mostly on the Trib, since the last two years are the ones that really hurt.

This is so stupid. Hendry had been here for a decade of disappointment. Not two years. This organization has performed as poorly as possible given the resources spent. Soriano sucks and is overpaid today, not jus two year from now. Hendry has been horrible and keeping him is a stupid idea.

People are adjusting their thought patterns to fit the idea that Hendry might just be sticking around.

Wonderful.

"Decade of disappointment"?

I agree Hendry needs to go, but the Cubs' last decade has been the most successful one in any of our lifetimes.

Gillick's resume:

Toronto Blue Jays (1978-1994)

Gillick is mostly recognized for being the architect of three World Series championship teams. He led the Toronto Blue Jays to their first two championships. The Blue Jays won five division titles from 1985-1993 and captured back-to-back championships from 1992-1993.

The Blue Jays have only once finished higher than third place in the AL East since Gillick departed following the 1994 season.

Baltimore Orioles (1995-1998)

The Baltimore Orioles haven't had a winning season since Gillick led them to back-to-back ALCS appearances from 1996-1997. Within 2 seasons, the Orioles found themselves at 88-74 and playing the eventual World Series champion New York Yankees in the 1996 ALCS. They were losers to the Cleveland Indians in the 1997 ALCS.

Seattle Mariners (1999-2003)

The Seattle Mariners enjoyed back-to-back playoff appearances under Gillick's guidance from 2000-2001. The 2001 Mariners tied the 1906 Cubs for most wins in one season after going 116-46. They were defeated by the New York Yankees in the ALCS in both seasons. The Mariners missed the playoffs in 2002 and 2003 with a 93-69 record.

The Blue Jays, Orioles, and Mariners have combined for no playoff appearances since Gillick left the organizations.

Philadelphia Phillies (2005-2008)

The Philadelphia Phillies were the laughingstock of MLB before Gillick became GM in 2005. Within three years, the Phillies defeated the Tampa Bay Rays in the 2008 World Series, giving Gillick his third championship as a general manager.

Gillick still serves as an advisor with the Phillies as they were the first team to reach 60 victories in 2011.

Gillick is on Waddle and Silvy. Says that he'd envision Hendry as his GM if he were to work for the Cubs and that Jim is "a good baseball man."

Ugh.

Ugh.

So if Jim is fired, then Gillick is brought in, he'd hire Hendry?

Or could it be talking points because Jim is a friend and Gillick doesn't actually work for the Cubs yet?

I'm confused, and honestly, losing hope that Gillick would change much as President.

I would hope/assume he's being diplomatic. It's not like he's going to be talking about cleaning house at this point.

My thought, and my hope, too, assuming he's actually gonna be brought in. The last thing this organization needs is more "old timey" baseball guys.

I hope so too, but I heard the interview and it seemed like a genuine answer.

As opposed to what? Was he flat-out asked about Hendry?

Yes, he was asked specifically about whether he would see Hendry as his General Manager if he were in a President-type position with the Cubs and he said something to the effect of he would "see no reason not to keep Hendry" as the GM and went on to praise Hendry for his knowledge and past success. It wasn't the typical "we would have to assess the situation and determine what is best for the future of the team" type answer.
