Why would you want hometown announcers to be neutral? They SHOULD be homers.

I think there's a happy medium. Guys like Brennamen and Harrelson have a tendency to excessively whine and complain, almost even bash other teams. There could be a little bit of rose colored glasses here, but Len doesn't really go there. When I think "homer" I think of someone who calls the game based more on a rooting interested than what is actually going on. Of course there should be a slight bias, but not to the extent that some guys call a game.

Why not? Their intended audience are fans of the team they work for.

If the color guys are big homers, I don't think that's a huge deal, but I think more than ever when so many people are getting their games from MLB.tv and EI, that a neutral tone is not too much to ask of play by play guys, at least to an extent. We're spoiled because whoever the Cubs have doing games have obviously been instructed to consider that every WGN game is a national TV game, or maybe we've just been lucky with Chip and Len in that aspect.

As for Brennaman's call, it's kinda obnoxious. I understand they're chasing the Cardinals in the standings, and there's a little bit of bad feelings there. But the payoff was winning a game that brought them to within 3 games of 1st while still being in 4th place. If you're going to be that....gregarious with a call, I would think there'd be some special impetus behind it(like Len's Hey Hey call or any number of iconic calls that came in crucial games). So as it is, it's annoying, and is another example of Brennaman being a townie of a PBP guy like Harrelson. "Most obnoxious walkoff call of the year"? I don't know, that annoyance doesn't really linger with me beyond watching the video like it seemingly does with Aramis Fan.

Brennaman does whine a lot. In general he is very, very difficult to listen to. I have a hard time calling him a total homer though because he does rip into the Reds too. I can't say I've ever heard Hawk do that. Granted, I try my best to never watch Sox games.

I wish that same person would tell Hawk that. I think the difference is just that the Cubs haven't hired blowhard assholes in a while.

Because I want to hear a legitimate broadcast, not a cheer-leading squad. Guys like Harrelson and Brennaman, Harrelson being the absolute extreme can ruin an entire broadcast, even if you are on their side.

Hawk and Brennaman are hacks and have plenty of examples of being "cheerleaders," but I'm still baffled as to why you're complaining when that happens when their team wins in walk-off fashion. It would be one thing if you were showing a clip of him calling a Reds home run like that yet they were still down by God knows how many runs and had no chance to win, but come on...complaining that they're being too excited or "homers" over a walk-off win is [expletive] ridiculous.

How about Brantley saying something about the "C" word...

He was talking about his boat.

"i'll leave when i'm good and ready."

Very true, N&G. I think the hiring of Dusty and Jocketty was an attitude change for the Reds organization. They clearly put a target on the Cardinals and they became 'enemy Number 1'. They were the team to be beat, in every aspect of the game. And the announcers picked up on it.

While some complained that Harry Caray was a homer and yes, he was..he still criticized the Cubs when they deserved it. I think the fans want excitement but also want to hear the frustration and sometimes, disgust when they see it on the field. Harry would never say "we" like Hawk always does about the White Sox. Harry would ask "Do you have a mouse in your pocket?". Harry was the best.

I guess I just think the call is stupid.

DID HE

DID HE

DID HE

HE DID

HE DID

HE DID

REDS WIN

REDS WIN

REDS WIN

If he would have kept it to one "HE DID" and one "REDS WIN," I personally think it would have sounded better.(I know that's really nitpicky, haha) The point of starting the thread is more of an overall shot at guys like Brennaman and Harrelson, I guess. This incident just sparked my frustration.

I don't know where else to post this, but I encountered Johnny B. Baker and Thom Brennaman hanging out together at a bar here in town after the game last night. Dusty was surprisingly sans toothpick, and I got a shoulder pat from Thom as I greeted him on his way out. Somehow I missed Dusty.

Did Thom stink of cigarette smoke?

We didn't embrace, so I can't attest one way or the other. He still had shirt and tie on, while Dusty was kicking it casual in a short sleeve button down and jeans, and he was conspicuously missing his armbands.

My only issue with the call is him saying "Brandon". I hate it when announcers use first names or nicknames like that.

Bulls announcers said "Michael" for years

And we know Red Kerr wasn't a homer.

And had I watched Bulls games, I would have hated it.

Michael is Michael. Brandon is not Brandon.
