Probable Starters

Iowa: RHP Alberto Cabrera (1-2, 9.62 ERA, 2.1 IP, 17 K, 16 BB; overall: 7-4, 6.78 ERA, 73 IP, 51 K, 27 BB)

Tennessee: LHP Brooks Raley (3-5, 4.75 ERA, 66.1 IP, 40 K, 29 BB)

Daytona: TBA

Peoria: LHP Austin Kirk (4-3, 2.39 ERA, 75.1 IP, 63 K, 15 BB)

Boise: RHP Austin Reed (0-0, 10.80 ERA, 3.1 IP, 4 K, 2 BB) & RHP Jin-Young Kim (0-1, 6.75 ERA, 4 IP, 0 K, 3 BB)

Not that anyone really gives a crap about Alberto Cabrera's stats (seriously, that pitching staff is awful), but I'm thinking there's a typo in his innings pitched for Iowa.

Either that, or the catcher sucks at catching third strikes and he leaves a bunch of stranded runners.

One of the things that MLB organizations do is NOT admit their scouting gaffes, and each system suffers top to bottom by holding back PROSPECTS who were not bonus babies but outplay the players who were given huge bucks, and many chances to fail, Bour and Rohan are good examples of this scenario.

Bruce Miles[/url]"]Chen, from Taiwan, is a former second baseman. He covers a lot of ground," Oneri said. "He's got a very good eye at the plate, a very good on-base percentage guy."

Another interesting story out of Boise is that Kyler Burke, the Cubs' minor-league player of the year as an outfielder in 2009, is now pitching. Burke, a lefty, is 1-0 out of the pen so far.

"It came about in spring training," Oneri said. "We had talked about his offense, and he just decided (he wanted to pitch. He looks like a natural. His throws from the outfield were always accurate, and his head moved very little. He's showing signs of having a good breaking ball and changeup. His delivery looks effortless"

Burke hit .212 with 7 homers last year with Daytona.

Otherwise, Boise has an extremely young team.

"We've got nine guys 19 or younger," Oneri said. "Guys on other teams are older, but our guys will be better for it down the line.

Uh oh. Josh Vitters was just hit by a pitch, there was an injury delay and then the Smokies pinch ran for him.

Austin Reed looks to be repeating his first appearance of the season - 3 scoreless and then falling apart in his 4th inning of work.

Reed in the first 3 IP: 1 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 1 K, 6-1 GO-FO.

Reed's final line: 3.2 IP, 4 H, 6 ER, 3 BB, 1 K, 1 HBP, 8-2 GO-FO.

Rohan isn't a prospect. He's always been old for his leagues and never really has produced. Even this year, his "breakout" is mostly what looks to be a BABIP in the .370 range.

I'm confused a bit by the Bour example too. Rebel Ridling has been playing most of the 1B for the Smokies but he's not really a bonus baby. Are you complaining that Vitters (23 games played at 1B) is blocking Bour's progress? Vitters is still a year and a half younger than Bour and is performing well... it'd be kind of odd to single him out.

I think he was comparing Silva's rapid promotion to the lack of promotion for Bour or Rohan.

Tennessee's Josh Vitters goes to his knee after being hit in the head by a pitch from Barons' Nevin Griffith in the fifth inning at Regions Park in Hoover, Ala., Friday, June 24, 2011. He left the game after being hit.

Jin-Young Kim: 3.2 IP, 5 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K, 4-3 GO-FO. He hit his pitch count after taking 15 pitches to get his last batter of the night out.

So after his 0/4 with 4K tonight, Brett Jackson has now whiffed in 57 of 179 AB for a total of 31.8% of his AB. Is nobody but me concerned about this?

See, I thought that at first too, but the whole "many chances to fail" thing threw me off that one.

I think everyone's concerned. I don't think anyone has any illusions that he'll ever be a low (relatively) K guy, but I had hoped that he could work that rate down to around the low-mid 20's. He's looking more Drew Stubbs-ian than I had hoped.

While that's not good news, judging from the fact he isn't laying on his back clutching at his face or anything he's probably not hurt too bad. My first thought was a broken wrist or something...

Never fun to be hit on the head by a rock traveling 85-95 MPH, but as long as he doesnt have a concussion or a broken face like Marlon, Im not to wooried about him. Hopefully hes back in by today or tomorrow as hes making his way back into our top 3-5 prospects by default.

Yes, I'm big-time concerned. He's shown no progress in this area and has gotten much worse this year. After his draft summer, I'd hoped that some mechanical corrections or whatever that he coud become more adequate as a contact guy, and that between his HR's and walks it would more than offset. He's got some BP HR-power, and some game HR power too, but there is limited indication that his HR-rate is enough to really counterbalance SO many K's.

If the only skill is walking, and he hits a decent but unspectacular number of HR's, and his defense is CF-OK/average while he's young but he really needs to play corner to be a defensive asset, I don't think he projects very well at all. He's kind of relied all along on a super-BABIP to keep his average afloat. That might be a true reflection of a patience approach, swing only at pitches I can whack, so when he does both to put the ball in play he whacks a lot.

But I admit I'm kind of afraid he's just going to be a contact-challenged low-average hitter who won't have enough special HR power or defense to justify the low-average.

Hopefully he makes some adjustments and gets better. I am somewhat afraid that when guys are giving away AB's to the K all the time, that one of the adjustments is to be more aggressive. So that eventually in an attempt to keep his average anti-awful, he may end up sacrificing a lot of the walks that are currently his one asset.
