Who said Major League Baseball’s schedule-makers were cruel to the White Sox this season?

After all, how often does a team come off a difficult road trip to Minnesota and Arizona, only to return home and find that it gets a bye week before heading to Colorado next Tuesday?

Three games with the Cubs, then three with Washington.

Why put a competitive team together that can play exciting games into October when they can wheel this carcass of a club out there for some excitement in June, get it out of the way now, then get back to the business of preparing for the dark days coming to the North Side.

“Don’t blink because there’s another big series around the corner,’’ Quade said Sunday.

Well, Mike, how can I blink knowing that a blue train wreck is off the tracks and heading southbound?

Sox fans are praying for their team to start playing to its talent level and make an October run. The Cubs are just another team standing in the way of that progress — kind of like road kill you can’t swerve away from in time, so why not just run over it again.

They’re fighting the idea that this is no longer their town, dealing with the reality that they’re the second-class citizens following a second-rate team.

You have to give them credit, though, for finally having stopped following the flock to “The Dump’’ on Addison and Clark, as evidenced by the way Brewers and Yankees fans took over the ballpark this week. But the new pecking order in the city is still tough for them to swallow.

Considering the direction of the franchise, get used to it.

Please, tell us how you really feel

I don't see the Cubs being second to the White Sox in terms of popularity anytime soon. That statement makes no sense to me.

Indeed. Trash on the Cubs all day long, but the second class citizen bit is just more pathetic jealous wishful thinking from the Sox side.

Yeah, if it was going to happen it would have happened between 1990 and 1997.

FUN TRIVIA

In the standings, are the White Sox closer to

A) The Playoffs

B) The Cubs

HINT: THE ANSWER IS NOT A

Posted

The Cubs do in fact have their fair share of aging, declining players due to ill advised contracts. If the ALL IN White Sox fans want to look into a crystal ball showing them what their team will look like in 2-3 years, look no further. Meanwhile the Royals and Indians have the young talent to take over that division sooner than later, and their will always be the Twins.

As for taking over the town, the 1st step for the White Sox will have to be to get out of the ghetto and head north.

Hes also blissfully ignoring the fact that the Nationals are one of the hottest teams in baseball and have a better record than the White Sox.

I didn't click on that link but I know Joe Cowley's hack writing even when I don't see his byline.

Cowley is a joke. I'm surprised he was able to move his lips from Ozzie's butt long enough to type an anti Cub article.

There is a kernel of truth in this guy's argument when he talks about the Brewers and Yankees fans taking over Wrigley Field this last week. Through 31 games before this week, the CUBS were averaging 34,818 per home date. For the Milwaukee series they drew crowds of 39070, 39151, 39821, & 40024..... or an average of 39,516. During the Yankees series they drew 42219, 42236, & 41828.... for an average of 42,094. It's not at all unreasonable to assume that a lot of Brewers and Yankees fans attended these games at Wrigley last week, but I'd hardly call that "taking over" the ball park.

Now, on the other side of town, where the white sox are averaging slightly over 22,000 per home date, the Yankees' last visit to sox park (admittedly it was last season) drew crowds of 38596, 38811, & 39433..... or an average of 38,946. The CUBS v. white sox game at the Cell tonight drew 36,005. Would it be fair, then, to assume that the Yankees and the CUBS are taking over sox park ????

I guess you could spin it any way you want to, but for me..... the CUBS are drawing 36,000 per home date, and the white sox are drawing 22,000 per home date. Now, tell me again who's the second class citizen here ??

Controversies

In May 2004 while traveling with the White Sox on a road trip to Toronto, Cowley made disparaging remarks about the city of Toronto in a radio interview, calling it “nothing but a city in a third-world country."[1] Subsequently during the series in Toronto, Cowley refused to stand for the Canadian national anthem prior to a game. Toronto Blue Jays president Paul Godfrey described Cowley as having “bad manners” and had letters of complaint sent to both Cowley and his publisher over the incident.

Cowley gained notoriety nationally when he admitted on November 21, 2006 on the Mike and the Mad Dog show, which is heard on WFAN New York, to be the only writer to vote Derek Jeter in sixth place on the American League MVP ballot. However, if Cowley had placed Jeter first on the ballot, Justin Morneau still would have won.

That was the second such incident for Cowley; after omitting Blue Jays players Carlos Delgado and Vernon Wells, two top-ten overall finishers, from his 2003 AL MVP ballot, the Chicago chapter suspended him from voting the subsequent year. They accused Cowley of not voting seriously, saying he "embarrassed" the Chicago chapter of the BBWAA. [1]

In November 2009, a Chicago White Sox fan blog posted a report that their sources had said the White Sox were having preliminarily discussions to acquire Adrian Gonzalez from the San Diego Padres in a three-way deal.[2] Cowley called the blogger a "trekkie turned blogger" who wrote from his basement.[3] Cowley occasionally mocks SoxNet.net on Twitter and on the radio from time to time.[4] Cowley's initial mocking prompted a response from the SoxNet.net blog calling his attacks "unprofessional, offensive, and completely inappropriate".[5] Cowley replied, but SoxNet.net opted not post his reply, calling Cowley's initial attack "mature" compared to his response.[6]

In my mind everybody involved in that organization talks a lot of crap despite not being all that good. But they have been better than the Cubs for a long time.

Overall they've been better, but the Cubs have made 4 playoff appearances post-strike while the White Sox have made 3. Although they actually capitalized on their "destiny" year and the Cubs crapped the bed. The Sox have been consistently around .500 and have had no really awful seasons, but is that really a badge of honor? It's almost easier to win in cycles of really bad and then really good than just hovering around .500 most years.

I'm not sure where you're coming from. The CWS won 90+ three times in the 2000s, plus an 88 and 89 win season. They were below .500 once. They've been better than the Cubs.

I remember at the beginning of the season there was an article posted here about this being the year that the White Sox finally take over Chicago. Pretty sure it was Cowley.

ETA: Yup, here it is.

Sounds like Joe wants the Sox to become the Number 1 team in town that he thinks that if he keeps writing these kinds of articles it will happen.

Still doesn't mean anyone cares, which kind of flies in the face of his "taking over Chicago" claim.

True. Im not going to lie though, Id rather the Cubs be really good and nobody caring than sucking and having the benefit of a large market, famous park, and plenty of folklore.

Right, I understand that part. If they were going to take over Chicago, it would have happened a while ago. They've really outperformed the Cubs for a while now, but it hasn't changed things.

It's not like the Sox have been "really good", though. They've been above average. If they went on a Braves or Yankees type run of making the playoffs every year for a 5 year stretch, then they'd be a hell of a lot more popular.

It's Sox vs Cubs for the fourth most relevant professional sports team in Chicago!
