Unless they meet in the playoffs this will be the last game the Smokies ever play in Carolina. Next year the current Carolina AA franchise is being sold and moved to Pensacola, Florida. The current Mudcats owner, in turn, is buying the Kinston Indians (A+ Carolina League) and moving them to Zebulon, where they will take on the Mudcats' name (the AA team will get a new name when they move to Pensacola). This is basically due to long travel times between Carolina and most of the other Southern League cities. Carolina is a geographic outlier for the Southern League but a good fit for the Carolina League.

Vitters watch: Already has a double

He's really been on a role lately. I just hope they keep him in AA as long as possible. In the past, it'd feel like a hot streak around summer could get him a bump. Feel like he really needs to consolidate at a level and see how he adjusts.

Daytona's win tonight clinched the first half of the FSL North.

Candelario's OBP is gonna sink like a ship if he keeps having nights like this one... :bye:

I highly doubt that anyones gotten a look at Candelario, but does anyone know if he has the potential for power? Obviously, if he makes the bigs, it will be at least 4-5 years down the road, and that's if Vitters or Baez( whose also likely at least 4-5 years away) don't end up the 3B of the future.

Baseball Reference has him listed at 6'1 180 lbs. Considering he's only 17, I'm thinking he should have power potential.

As a team, they drew 12 walks yesterday. Is that normal in this league?

one would assume that is not normal for any league. many young latin american players are fairly raw, meaning that pitchers lack command but hitters lack patience.

it's been nice watching our big-bonus guys from latin america performing well so far. i miss carlos henry, who made an error a game after signing a decent-sized bonus. whatever happened to that catcher/3b (contreras) we signed for 750k?

Was Canderlerio a big bonus guy or did he come out of nowhere?

Candelario got a big bonus (at least for Cubs standards in Latin America - $500,000).

I never saw anything more than 1 tweet on July 2 regarding Contreras' bonus. If he did sign for $750k, I bet we would have heard much more. He probably signed for a big bonus but it was probably in the $250k range and the $750k was just a product of rumors flying everywhere. This happened with Francisco Sanchez who was reported to have signed for around $600k on July 2 but when the dust had settled, he had signed for $350k.

the guy from espn deportes said he signed for 850k. would be nice to know how much they dropped on him. chances are they're not too thrilled with their investment so far, considering the steroid suspension and poor defense.

Right, but he's in the NWL at age 19 which isn't too shabby.

The Boise PBP announcer was quoting the $850k bonus for Contreras. Maybe it's legit but I still think it's weird that BA never mentioned his bonus.
