Hatley and Searle moved up. Hatley has 21K/8BB/15IP/0HR.

From an article last week: http://www.pjstar.com/sports/chiefs/x956208349/Chiefs-hold-on-to-beat-River-Bandits

He throws harder than anybody on the team. He goes right at hitters and gets ahead in the count,” catcher Micah Gibbs said. “Then he has one of the best breaking balls in low-A that I’ve seen. Whenever he gets ahead of batters it’s tough to come back on him.” Hatley, a right-hander who throws in the low to mid 90s, ..... had Tommy John surgery in August of 2009 after pitching in 30 games, with 16 starts, for the Chiefs..... “It’s nice having that kind of velocity at the end of the game, but there’s some things he still needs to learn,” Peoria pitching coach Jeff Fassero said. “He gets a little over-amped trying to throw the ball. If he gets it figured out I think he’ll be good.”

Obviously I thought the comment by Gibbs that he both throws harder and has the best breaking ball were interesting. That would seem to give him a chance. Another converted position player, relative to college.

The other thing I thought was interesting was that there has been some discussion about how hard Beeler throws. If Gibbs and the pjstar were to be taken literally, it would seem that Beeler doesn't throw as hard as low-mid-90's Hatley, for whatever that's worth.

hatley has been known to pump it in the mid-90's since he came back. sounds like he still has his plus slider, so he may very well become the guy a lot of people comp'd him to back pre-surgery, a michael wuertz-ish type pen arm.

I remember listening to a pre-TJS Boise game and Hatley was hitting 96 consistently. Also, he's technically not a position convert - he was a two-way player in JC (much like Nick Struck) who switched to just pitching.

True. He pitched 4 innings in college.

And certainly when the Cubs drafted him, it was to be a pitcher from the start.

Was it really just 4 IP? For some reason, I thought it was much more. Scratch the Nick Struck comparisons.

He pitched two as a freshman and two more as a sophomore. I googled earlier just to remind myself of how it was. Interestingly, had he returned to school for another year (he was only a 39th round draft pick, so his coach seemed to think he'd probably come back), the Palomar coach was planning on him for rotation rather than outfield.

as a side note, i believe beeler is only peaking in the mid- 90's, whereas Hatley is in the mid-90's more consistently. Of course, when Hatley was being stretched out, he was only in the low-mid 90's range as well.

Cubs - The system of overachieving/surprising older corner talent. Just realized Bryan LaHair was near the top of PCL offensive numbers, to go along with Ridling/Flaherty/Spencer at AA, Bour at A+, and Greg Rohan at Low A.

The one thing I'd love to see is that AAA rotation revamped, but there really aren't that many options. Boy, it's an ugly group there.

Will McNutt be ready for AAA any time soon? Also, maybe they can stretch Carpenter out to start again and send him back up, and hopefully Coleman will be able to help them soon.

McNutt probably won't be ready for some time. He's slowly being stretched out after the blister problems and he didn't have much time at AA last season either. Ideally, he'd stay at Tennessee and rack up some very good starts and then maybe finish the last few weeks of the season in Iowa or get a September cup of coffee.

Tennessee game postponed so Soto's rehab gets started tomorrow instead. Tennessee will play 2 tomorrow.

Clevenger with a walk and two more hits. His OBP is .441 for the season, although it's over .500 at Iowa. When you K less than you walk, it's kind of fun.

Greathouse is pitching for Peoria in the game that was suspended yesterday so Hayden Simpson will probably start game 2.

Dae-Eun Rhee has been coming on of late. Thru 5 today, he's allowed 2 earned, striking out 10 while walking 1.

I guess my scoreboard was a bit behind. Looks like he's finally recovered from that TJS and could be making his way onto at least our top 20.

Oh man, he could be huge. He hasn't been on the radar for over a year; if he starts producing, that's like another draft pick.

Holy crap. That's a career high.

He went into the game with 13 Ks on the season.

Bour with another HR. More impressively, Rhee with 9k with only 1 BB through 4 IP with ER on a solo shot.

Bour's on fire and has been on fire for a long time now. I'm impressed.

I'm in wait and see mode with Rhee, but today is definitely encouraging.

FYI, Larry Suarez was promoted to Peoria to replace Hatley.
