If I had to guess probably something family-related. He doesn't have a history with any social anxiety stuff, does he? If not, wouldn't it be unusual for something like this to show up this late in his career/life?

According to a later update, the reason is concern for his family in light of the tornadoes in Mississippi. He wants to go home and make sure his family is OK. he Phillies hope for his return in time for his next start.

I am not sure if I am being insensitive here but, doesn't he have a cell phone? Why does he need to be down there to "make sure" his family is ok?

 

Maybe someone is unaccounted for or there was extensive damages to a family members property. If so, I retract my statement and wish the Oswalt family all the best.
