Probable Starters

Iowa: TBA

Tennessee: RHP Trey McNutt (0-0, 0.00 ERA, 2.2 IP, 2 K, 2 BB)

Daytona: LHP Zach Rosscup (0-0, 2.00 ERA, 9 IP, 6 K, 2 BB)

Peoria: RHP Robinson Lopez (0-0, 6.00 ERA, 9 IP, 6 K, 1 BB)

Finally, an interesting pitching day. I'm excited to see how McNutt and Lopez do and even interested in Rosscup, too. And to be quite honest, TBA is probably the most exciting pitcher Iowa has at the moment.

I noticed Rhee has only made one appearance on 4/9 which he pitched very effectively in but hasn't since. Anyone hear of him running back into the injury bug or anything?

EDIT: Nevermind. I saw in the 4/9 thread that he had to be removed because of a blister.

While they're not renowned for their insight into prospects and I'd rather what they suggest didn't happen, it's nice to see places like Rotoworld geeking out about Jackson.

Brett Jackson missed the cycle by a single Wednesday for Double-A Tennessee.

We've been assuming Jackson would be promoted to Triple-A before long, but he's making a case to get jumped right to the majors. The 22-year-old is hitting .419/.544/.721 in 13 games for Tennessee. He has 12 walks, versus 10 strikeouts, and he's also stolen six bases in eight attempts.

When he's promoted to Chicago will he bump Byrd to right or play right?

I think that when he makes it to Chicago, he pushes Byrd to another team. Unless Colvin falls flat on his face, which is possible, at least.

That's a really hard question to answer. It depends on when/why he's promoted and where the Cubs are at that point. Jackson's probably a better defender than Byrd but the Cubs are unlikely to bump Byrd unless the Cubs are out of contention. I think where Jackson plays depends on who gets squeezed out of the 2012 plans first-Colvin or Byrd.

I'd forgotten about Rhee. Yesterday when Tim was mentioning Tennessee rotation not being as good as usual, I was thinking Whitenack was about the only A-ball guy who might end up both being a good major leaguer and spending time at Tenn this year. Obvoiusly if Struck is going to end up a good major leaguer, there's probably also a good chance that would involve him pitching well this summer and getting promoted to AA as ;well, although I'm not sure he's going to ever be a good major leaguer that we look back and say "and struck was on that 2011 AA staff, too...")

But I'd forgotten Rhee, because I haven't been a big believer since the surgery. But I know some of the posters have been pretty strong Rhee believers (I hope for good reason.) If indeed his arm is recovered enough so that he's going to be a winning major leaguer, then his arm will probably be recovered enough that he'll pitch his way out of Daytona at some point this summer. So if years out Rhee is a good major leaguer and we are looking back at the 2011 Tennessee staff, I suspect we'll include Rhee's name on the 2011 staff. If he isn't healthy enough and good enough to pitch himself out of Daytona this summer, then he'll probably never be healthy enough and good enough to be a good major leaguer either.

Would sure be cool if he emerged as a value prospect.

Cinsidering TBA is none other than Jay Jackson, whose off to a good start, hes by far the most exciting pitcher they have. Wellington Castillo also in Iowas lineup.

Great to see Jackson and Castillo are back at AAA.

#Cubs AA RHP Trey McNutt up to 95 in the first. Power brk ball just OK to start, finished with two sharp ones for strikeout

BenBadler

Lots of 93s and 94s in the second from McNutt. Great armside run at times, command is uneven tonight

McNutt done after 4 IP, prob playing it safe after coming off DL w blister. Made big pitch to strike out Fred Lewis I need to ask him about

Jay Jacksons final line: 5 IP 2 H 2 ER 1 BB 4 K. Not bad for his first game back.

Wellington Castillo with a double, Montanez 3-3 with a grand slam, and LaHair was ejected by the 2nd base ump early on. Im trying to swear off AAAAers in their late 20's, but damn, Montanez and LaHair are looking good this season.

what i don't get is, how come you have this fetish for the brad snyders/micah hoffpauirs/scott lahairs of the world, yet you hate jr mathes? he's in his late 20s and occupying a roster spot just like those AAAA position players.

Because its hard not to be excited by these guys OPSing in the 1.000s like its nothing, even though I know damn well that when they hit the majors they become, well, Micah Hoffpauir and Jake Fox. JR Mathes, on the other other hand just hangs out and is all kinds of mediocre. Pretty much everyone on the Iowa roster aside from Jackson, Carpenter, and Castillo, and to a lesser extent Smith, and Gaub can be given the old Crash Davis cliche, but its still fun to follow these guys when their mashing like this. And its hard to believe that at least one of these guys cant come to the big leagues and at least become Russell Branyan. Wouldnt you rather at least once give one of these guys a shot rather than scraping someone like Reed Johnson, Joey Gathright, or Daryl Ward out of the trash?

Ever looked at the Iowa (and PCL) park factors? There's a reason why the hitters look great and the pitchers look lousy.
