Angels DFA Brandon Wood

Angels designated INF Brandon Wood for assignment.

The Angels plan to activate Erick Aybar from the disabled list Wednesday, so Wood gets the boot. The former top prospect has a .168 batting average over his first 493 major league plate appearances to go along with an ugly 153/13 K/BB ratio, so he has no business being on a big-league roster right now. It will be interesting to see if another team takes a chance on him.

Id take out a flyer. Cant be much less useful than DeWitt.

I'd take a flyer on him if you need somebody to fill out a minor league roster, but not on the ML roster. As for career stats:

Wood - 493 PA, .168 BA, 153/13 K/BB ratio

DeWitt - 869 PA, .258 BA, 164/96 K/BB ratio

Wow, I just looked at his career line on BBR. Hes only 26, but damn, the big leagues have been pretty brutal to him. This being said, Id take him on and put him in the spare parts shop in Iowa. Wasnt he a cant miss prospect once upon a time?

He was, but now he misses the ball about 1/3 of the time. He's worth picking up just for the hell of it, but he's probably not going to amount to anything at this point. Only 26 is not "only 26" when he's had no major league success whatsoever. He's at the point now where he's as good as he's going to get, and that's not very good.

Hasn't Wood's playing time been very sporadic at the major league level?

He was battling Sean Rodriguez, Howie Kendrick, Maicer Izturis, Erick Aybar and Chone Figgins for playing time in Anaheim, which probably has stunted his ability to mature at the major league level.

A change of scenery and instruction with regular playing time might be all he needs.

Of course, that stuff isn't working so far for Carlos Pena.

i dunno, he started 35 games between april and may of last year... that's at least pretty regular playing time. and really, when you're putting up an OPS under .400, how long can a team keep running you out there?

i guess if you're a team like the pirates you mineaswell take a shot and see if you can fix him, but a quick look at his batting line as a major leaguer indicates that he is completely lost at the plate.

The Pirates announced that they outrighted Brian Burres, Kevin Hart, Brandon Wood and Steve Pearce to Triple-A to create 40-man roster space. All four players can now elect free agency. Wood and Pearce would have been arbitration eligible for the first time this offseason, and though neither player projected to earn even $1MM, the Pirates decided to cut them loose instead of tendering contracts.

Wood is 26 now, 27 to start the 2012 season, and considering the hype and ceiling he had not too long ago, it's hard not to at least take a flier out him. We have a supposed hitting guru on our hands to help him out and a vacant 3B job. This could be one of those low risk asset building moves that Theo talked about.

Wood has trouble making adequate contact playing slow pitch softball.
