Well, thankfully the Red Sox and Yankees are set at 1B. Since Prince doesn't have the glove that Adrian has, might be able to get away with 18/19 per?

Remember Prince is a Boras client, and Scott is going to probably use the A-Gon deal as his measuring stick. There are more teams than the Red Sox and Yanks out there with money that would be willing to spend big for either Princ or Pujols. The Angels, Dodgers, and Mets could all be very much in the race, and teams like the Mariners, Orioles, and maybe even the Nationlals could get in on the fun. The Blue Jays recently dumped that massive Wells contract, so they could be in.

lol one of my friends kept telling me its suspicious the Sox didnt extend him yet and thought we could have a shot. guess not.

Knew this was coming. I had a faint hope they wouldn't work something out, but given what Boston gave up to get him, it was highly unlikely they'd let him get away.

And Prince isn't as good as AGon (offensively or defensively), but he is a Boras client.

I don't think this affects Pujols OR Fielder personally. Gonzalez was traded and then signed a deal keeping him in Boston(his preferred location by most accounts) and avoiding FA completely.

I'll be very surprised if in an open market Fielder(who doesn't offer as much to a team as A-GON does) doesn't get a more expensive deal than what AGON just signed. And Pujols isn't going to compare himself to anyone, period. He's the franchise and any team that entertains signing him is going to have to pay him as such.

In the end, I think if AGON had wanted more money, he could have gotten it too, but he's with a franchise that's basically a perennial contender and took a little less to stay there and try to win a championship or two.

Dodgers and Mets definitely cant afford him. Angels have Morales at 1B and just took on that awful Wells contract, which will make another big contract hard to fit. Mariners have Smoak as their long term 1B (and Jack Z doesn't seem the type to overspend) and the Nats just signed LaRoche to a multiyear deal.

Of the teams you listed, I only see the Orioles and Blue Jays as teams that will likely be in on the bidding.

The Nats signed LaRoche to a 2 year deal ($8mm next year, 3rd year option, $1mm buyout). He can be moved next off-season if they needed to.

This all beoing said, ill be quite dissapointed if we don't end up with 1 of the 2. Between Fuku, Pena, and Grabow, that's 25 mil alone, and and don't forget Silva and probably Aramis. besides, The Cubs are certainly a more desireable destination than the Os, Nats, or Jays, and that's something players take into consideration. If/when the Cubs do finall win it all, what player wouldn't want to be a part of it?

Because Prince is a Boras client, he will be marketed much higher than he actually is. Something like:

He has the raw power of Albert Pujols, Jimmy Fox and Mark McGuire, the ability to hit for a high average like Tony Gwynn or Rogers Hornsby, the defensive skills of Keith Hernandez, Pujols or Mark Grace, while running the bases like a young Rickey Henderson or Vince Coleman.

Sorry I can't post the link from my Blackberry, but the numbers are 21 mil/year 2012-2016, 21.5 mil/year in '17-'18. If anyone out there is wondering how much Prince Fielder will cost, that pretty much sums it up.

except gonzalez is in shape and can actually field his position, while prince is a whale whose position will be "should DH" within about 3-4 years.

True as that may be, I cant imagine him not getting at least 5 years at 18-20 mil a pop. A lot of it depends on if he signs before or after Pujols. Aside from these 2, its nit a great free agent class, and any team with money to burn will be turning to them.

I can see how the 100+ year championship drought might actually work in the Cubs favor. It seems a bit ridiculous, but for someone like Albert, he can stay with the Cardinals for another 10 years making less than he is worth and be known as one of the greatest of all time that gave his 'hometown' team a discount and perhaps win another championship or two. Or, he can join the Cubs, earn the premium he deserves, and be a part of a team that has the financial and farm resources to build a powerhouse around him. That and be the man that killed the 104-114 year misery of the city of Chicago. He will be legendary, but joining the Cubs and winning a championship will make him a legend among legends.

All a bit sentimental and silly, but it's something I've considered he may be considering.

Just a bit? He'll follow the money, and let his agent come up the silly pandering nonsense.

There are usually way more teams interested than folks tend to identify in these sorts of posts. Heck many signings come out of LF, (Werth- Nats, Cliff Lee - Phils etc.)

I wouldn't be surprised if some totally unexpected team signs Fielder. Astros? Giants? DBacks? White Sox? etc.
