I'd like to see Coleman start twice, Russell once next Tuesday, and then hopefully catch a rainout/snowout either in Colorado or in Wrigley against San Diego.

Oh, and also that Cashner and Wells are fine in two weeks.

Call up Coello, have him and Russell split the 5 starter position, each going 2-4 innings depending on the matchups and how they fare during that game. Pray that Dempster, Z, and Garza go deep in games.

Well, for anyone worried about Cashner's year over year jump in innings moving from the bullpen to the rotation, I guess this solves that problem....now let's just hope he comes back healthy. I really hope it is "very mild" as Hendry put it. More serious rotator cuff problems seem to have a way of recurring (see John Maine).

Ouch.

About as good news as we could expect from the Cashner situation. Wells kinda came from nowhere though.

While I might be inclined to go with McNutt and Cabrera as our #4 and #5 starters (because I'm just crazy like that), I'd bet we will end up with Coleman and either Mathes or Russell.

He did alright last year in limited starts.

What? He was horrible last year. An ERA over 8 as a starter with a WHIP around 2. He was slightly better in the bullpen but not much.

He had three starts, one of which he went 6 with 3 earned runs and 10 k's. The other two starts were 3ip 5er, 4ip and 4er. Those numbers are pretty bad and I think the first start is more prominent in my mind. However, he only has three starts under his belt and everyone is writing the guy off. I'd like to see he and Coleman get called up for a couple starts.

Way too many walks and guys on base. About the only thing he has going for him is the 10 strikeout game, and those 10 accounted for almost all of the 13 strikeouts total that he had (vs. 10 walks). In the meantime he had a WHIP over 2 as a starter and gave up this line to hitters:

.347 .444 .490 .934

I really don't see the Cubs trying to pull off tandem starters in the bigs, no matter how much sense it might make.

Great point. I completely forgot about the Cashner inning issue. That does put somewhat of a silver lining on this as Cashner was going to have to miss some time this year no matter what.

That's putting a lot of pressure on Dempster, considering at least one bullpen arm automatically won't be available for each of his starts.

Thankfully the first part of our season is pretty light on quality teams. The Cubs are just going to have to roll the dice. Here's to hoping we can come back healthy and still above .500!

If you just start Russell or Cabrera, you're probably only getting 5 innings, maybe 6 if things go well. In the tandem, you're probably getting 6, maybe 7 innings if things go well. Sure the bullpen arm is unavailable the next day or two when they wouldn't be if he just threw one inning, but we have a 7 man pen. The first time through the rotation the back 4 guys threw 5.2 IP. I'm pretty comfortable with that type of workload being distributed among 3 guys in order to have a better chance at not forfeiting every fifth game.

Anyone think Chris Rusin has an outside chance of being called up? There are two open spots on the 40 right now and the soft-tossing no name lefty formula has worked against the Cubs in the past. Maybe it could work in their favor for once?

That's why I guessed Mathes has a shot. But yeah, Rusin did occur to me.

I'm not sure the Cubs want to add Mathes to the 40 man roster. If he bombs and is demoted or is replaced by Wells in two weeks, it would seem like a real waste. Rusin makes more sense as he could stay on the 40 man regardless of how long he's up for. It's likely he'll get a couple of opportunities in the next few years if he were to blow this one.

I think the idea is that Mathes is exactly the kind of marginal "talent" that they wouldn't mind losing when they try to send him back down.

Rotator cuff injuries are almost never minor. They start out that way sometimes and become worse. A strain is usually just another word for small tear. I shutter every time I hear about a pitcher with a rotator cuff injury, it's much worse than injuring your elbow.
