injuryexpert‎: Andrew Cashner will have MRI on his pitching shoulder. Cubs "very worried" at this stage.

Forgive my ignorance of pitching injuries and basic physiology, but was there anything in Cashner's history that would have predicted this? Were his mechanics bad, etc.?

A young guy like that presumably shouldn't have shoulder issues mid-way through his first start of the year I would think.

I read that Cashner and Wells were to be examined by Stephen Gryzlo yesterday. Wells has resumed playing catch, but I've found no news of the prognosis for him or Cashner. Anyone hear anything?

News was supposed to come out sometime today for both of them, but I haven't heard anything yet. As you said, Wells played catch while Casher is just reported to be feeling much better.

I heard on The Score today that both Wells and Cashner are scheduled to begin throwing later this week and would both be re-evaluated next week with respect to their next move, whether that be a rehab assignment or something else.

According to Rotoworld, which cited multiple sources, both Wells AND Cashner will begin throwing programs on Friday. The expectation/hope appears to be Wells returning in 2 weeks and Cashner sometime after that.

i am really excited by the prospect of one of these guys coming back and not having to forfeit every fifth game by starting russell.

Pretty much what I'm looking forward to as well. The experiment is getting pretty tiring at this point.

Watching Cub outfielders turn and run wildly after another of his mistakes is getting a tad tiring, agreed.

I'm wondering if Bibens-Dirks (or whatever) or Mathes would have been a better choice. Russell is terrible.

Jay Jackson very well might. By the time the next Russell/insta-loss spot comes up, it should be Jays throw day as well.

Is Jay ready to go 5-6 innings and throw 85-95 pitches? Didn't he just leave extended ST to join Tenn.?

Jackson went 5 IP, 2 H, 2 ER, 1 BB, 4 K for Iowa last night, throwing 69 pitches.

Any reports about his velocity? Is it still down, but not down enough to check for an injury? I don't understand why they're handling this the way they are.

I can't find any with a quick search, but it was a cold night in Iowa last night, so odds are it would be a little lower than expected regardless. Considering how effective he was(a walk, a single, and a triple were the only baserunners in 5 IP), indicators seem to be that he's healthy.

He was in the low 90s in his last rehab start in Arizona but I believe temps were in the 80s when he pitched there (regarding TT's note on the temps in Iowa).
