Havnt seen this posted here yet, but according to a Bruce Miles tweet, Todd Wellemeyer was cut, and Guzman, Berg, and John Maine were sent down today.

And I really hope that Quades smart enough not to let a solid outing vs. a weak lineup give Silva the last rotation spot.

He is, but Hendry probably wants to save his own ass and have Silva start the year as the #5 starter and Hendry will probably win out.

Hopefully they are smart enough together to have Cashner start at AAA instead of wasting him as the 6th inning guy in Chicago.

Haven't they already said if Cashner doensn't make the rotation he's going to the bulpen? I don't see any scenario where he's sent down.

They are [expletive]. Didn't they learn anything from moving Samardzija back and forth from starting to relief. [expletive] the Cubs.

That's certainly what they've led us to assume. I think they are worried about the bullpen after M,W,M (lazy)

6IP 3H 1R 3K 78 pitches with 51 strikes. I hate that Cashner crapped out, because my tune has changed. I'll be shocked if Silva isn't given the 5th spot now.

With a good outing on Monday, or hell, at ANY point this spring, Cashner could have had it. :banghead:

But wait, Cashner pitches Sunday. Maybe he has a chance yet? Hell if I know. He's going to have to throw 80 pitches and be fairly effective in the process, considering what Silva did today. Then again, I thought they'd announce before Sunday, so who knows?

Wellemeyer was assigned to minor league camp, not cut. Same as Guzman. Berg and Maine were optioned to Iowa. At least that's how cubs.com is reporting it.

They're gonna want to have Cashner throwing on back-to-back days before the season starts. I'd be shocked if he starts Sunday.

Of course not. They are too busy hiding behind the delusions of bolstering their bullpen for a playoff run.

I know I'm missing something here, but I'm not following you for some reason. Do you mean they'll want him pitching back to back days so he'll be coming out of the pen and Silva basically won the job today? If so, then it'll be really interesting to see IF Cashner actually does start Sunday then. Because then anyway, it'd at least appear as if it'd be likely to see him move to AAA and continue starting possibly.

Per Carrie Muskat:

The Cubs are expected to make a decision between Silva, Andrew Cashner and Braden Looper for the final rotation spot before Sunday.

No further starts for Cash.

What the hell has Looper done to even enter the conversation? The options from the get go should have been Cashner, Coleman, Carpenter, and Jackson. While this team could surprise a lot of people, I dont see it being the year, so they really should be auditioning guys who could be really good for the future. Even if Silva can be an OK 5th starter, which is asking a lot from him, his future with the organization ends this fall if not sooner. They're wasting time and talent.

If he's going to be in the bullpen to start the season, they're gonna want to have him able to pitch on consecutive days. So yeah, if he makes his start Sunday, that's a pretty good sign he'll be starting either in the majors or in Iowa.

But I sincerely doubt we'd let an arm like his get reps in Des Moines when he could be helping in the big league pen.

Latest round of cuts per Bruce Miles: Matt Camp, Scott Moore, Augie Doggie, Fernando Perez, and the unsinkable Bobby Scales. Again, the tweet said "cuts", so I don't know if they were sent to the minors or what.

Per rotoworld, as usual:

Cubs optioned OF Fernando Perez to Triple-A Iowa; reassigned INFs Bobby Scales, Augie Ojeda, Scott Moore and OF Matt Camp to minor league camp.

And with that, the Cubs have essentially set their roster for position players. Blake DeWitt keeps his spot on the roster after batting just .167 (8-for-48) while Darwin Barney will give the Cubs another option for second base. Reed Johnson, a non-roster invitee, will make the team as a reserve outfielder.

Just out of curiosity, whats the difference between being optioned to AAA and reassigned to minor league camp?

And I really hope that they find a space for Max Ramirez. I really dont like our bench which has been somewhat of a strength in the past.

I have a feeling we'll find a way to hide Ramirez. Probably DL him to start the year.

He could play [Tom Hanks' voice] BACKUP CATCHERRR!

But wouldn't want to waste his potential in that spot he'd get more at bats on the DL.

It mainly has to do with whether the player is on the 40-man roster, I believe. Players on the 40-man roster are optioned. Players on minor league contracts with NRIs are reassigned. Going in the opposite direction if a player on the 40-man is called up he's recalled, whereas if a player not on the 40-man is called up his contract is purchased (or sometimes worded as selected).

I dont see why he cant just be a bat off the bench. We carried both Cliff Floyd and Daryl Ward who essentially had no position. Why not Ramirez, who can be given looks at 1B, outfield, and emergency catcher?
