When would we like to begin the draft? I've scheduled an extended online draft, and this feature hasn't worked the last few years, but they have made some significant upgrades this offseason to the software, so maybe it will work gooder this year.

If the extended does work, I'd say the sooner the better. However, everyone needs to get their draft pick trades done before then, so maybe a week or 2, or after you've gotten everyone's money.

I should be available the entire week of March 7; that is our spring break and I'm not planning any extended vacation during that week. That doesn't mean I think we should wait that long to start the draft, just that I'll be likely to be able to draft quicker when my turn comes around during that week.

As in year's past, we will do the major league portion of the draft first and then we will follow it up with a prospect draft. Obviously, prospects are not allowed to be drafted in the major league phase of the draft and vice versa.

 

Do we need 12 rounds for the major league portion or less? Minor league portion rounds?

 

I've temporarily set up March 1st as the start date just so I can go in and see what's new and to navigate my way around. Don't start trading your draft picks until we have an agreement on what start date we will be using, as it may reset those picks if I change the draft date.

What were the problems with the extended draft the past couple of years? The only thing I noticed in my other league was roster limit restrictions would not allow some teams to draft certain positions after a certain point.

Juan could probably elaborate more fully since he was the commish for those particular seasons, but I seem to recall that the draft room kept locking up in the first round. We ended up doing an offline draft instead when the site admins couldn't resolve our issue(s).

I would vote to start on March 7th, Noon. That should give plenty of time to prepare for the draft and execute (> 3 weeks).

I am flexible with the timing of the draft, especially since we will be doing it via the internet.

 

My biggest suggestion would be to limit the major league draft to 10 rounds. But I can live with 12.

It seems to me that some of us have stopped drafting or trading picks for future years once it gets past 10 rounds. Personally I think that's sufficient; once you get past that you can probably do as well by picking up free agents as by continuing drafting.

I had already proposed the draft pick trade to Navin before you posted this and he accepted it today. If it's reset due to changing the draft date we can execute the trade again, so there shouldn't be any problem.

Yeah, besides queuing up a player, we have used PM to another league member to keep the draft moving at a decent clip. We haven't been able to use the queue thing the past few years, but PM has worked really well.

Yeah, I'm on my Blackberry as we speak. Wasn't sure how the CBS Sports drafting experience would work on it though. I can definitely PM people from work. Hell, I'll probably spend a week pretending to work while fine tuning my draftboard on Excel spreadsheets.
